After School
Program: C.O.M.P.A.S.S.
(Creating Opportunities
in Meridian for Parent and Student S uccess)
is an after school program created
to support students in grades K-5 who would benefit from additional
assistance. The school was fortunate enough to receive a grant to
create this 21st Century Community Learning Center.
Our goals for the grant are to improve academic achievement and support
families to feel more connected to our community. Selection was
based on teacher recommendations and assessments in Reading and Math.
There is no cost for the program and bus transportation home is
provided.
COMPASS has several parts:
Study Club: Students work on homework or
skill work in small groups with teachers, instructional assistants, and
volunteers. Particular emphasis will be on Reading and Math
skills, study habits and organization.
School Based Mentoring: Selected
students receive mentoring support from a caring community member. The
presence of caring individuals who, along with parents or guardians,
provide young people with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement,
anda constructive example is a strategy that can help young people of
allcircumstances to achieve.
Recreation Stations and 4-H After-school:
We also offer enrichment activities at IRPS including crafts, team
building games, recreation activities and field trips. Students must
attend the Study Time or Mentoring to qualify to stay for Recreation
and 4-H time.

School Parent Curriculum Night
This night, established for parents
only, is scheduled to take place shortly after school has resumed
in September. This evening sets the tone for learning and expectations
from the teacher, student and parent.
The purpose of this informational evening is to provide parents
with a curricular framework that includes the following: the alignment
of the school districts adopted curriculum with the essential academic
learning requirements (EALRS) and State benchmarks, teaching and
learning strategies, best practices student assessments, the 'how'
academic and social/emotional achievement are reported and the
home/school learning connection.
Book
Fair
Irene Reither
Primary School Library sponsors
one Book Fair yearly. It will be held
from January 29, 2008 – February 9, 2008.
The book fair generates books for our library
and is an event that the
children look forward to every year.
Books inspire young
minds, give children
educational advantages and promote lifelong learning. The gift of
reading is an
important legacy. When children read books that nourish their
minds, the
quality of their lives is raised forever. The school library and
its
activities promote a wonderful opportunity for families to get excited
about
books and learning
Additional
information please
Return-It Tickets
In the library
every child has the chance to earn
a Return-It Ticket each week for remembering to bring their books back
on time
for return or renewal. We like to
encourage them to be responsible and keep our circulation current. The Return-It Tickets are placed in a
container, a daily winner is drawn and their name is announced during
morning
announcements. They then come to the
library and receive a book to keep. This
reward system helps them get into the habit of showing responsibility.
"Gotcha" Tickets
At IRPS we encourage our students with
praise and rewards when they meet expectations and follow the
Guidelines for Success. Students will receive a Gotcha Ticket
when they are seen using appropriate school behavior. The ticket will
be deposited in the tumbler basket for a daily drawing. Gotcha ticket
winners will have their name announced on morning announcements.
Hall Monitors
The staff and students of Irene Reither
Primary School have initiated a new program as part of the our Student
Responsibility Plan. A student is chosen from each Third
Grade classroom to stand at a set place in our hallways before school
and during lunchtime. These students are praising good behavior -
walking, talking with quiet voices, and showing respect for themselves,
others, and their school. The students are also encouraged to
enter our building using the doorway that is closest to their
classrooms in the morning. This is helping to alleviate traffic
congestion and noise. We have found this to be a successful program in
our building and would like to thank the students for working together
to reach the goal of quieter, less congested hallways.
Highly Capable
Home Reading Program
The IRPS Home Reading Program is designed to improve student
reading. Daily reading with a child is the most powerful tool
that can be used to ensure school success. Each adult and child has
signed a contract stating that they will read together 15 minutes a
day, 16 days a month, or more. The adult checks off the minutes read
and signs the child's form. The teacher then records the number of days
and minutes read.
The four primary suggestions for parents:
* Read to your child every night
* Have your child read to you every night
* Read with your children every night; and
* Read your own books in front of your children
Kindergarten Spring Screening
Meridian School District takes time
every spring to screen all incoming Kindergarten students in order to
create heterogeneous classrooms, meet families, and prepare students
for the upcoming school year. The next Kindergarten Screening
dates have been set - May 3rd, 4th & 5th, 2004. Please look for
information and sign ups as spring arrives. We look forward to seeing
you there! If you are concerned about your child's development
prior to the screening, please call Meridian Special Services Office
for free screening information at 398-9898.
Meridian Early Childhood Program
As
we blend together a variety of funding sources targeting children in
early development, Meridian School District has designed the
Center for Children and Families out of Irene Reither Primary School.
This Center offers opportunities for children and families through
Parent Education, Academic Support, and much more! Click on the link
above for further information or contact us at Irene Reither Primary
– 360-398-2111.
Mileage Club
The Feelin' Good Mileage Club is our
noontime recess walking activity. One day each week students are
encouraged to walk on a designated walking course. This program
encourages individual performance and not competition. We
have special days when the parents are encouraged to come and walk with
their child(ren). All parents are invited to put on their
sneakers and come a walkin' during recess time. Kindergarten recess is
at 12:30. First grade recess is at 11:30. Second grade recess is
at 12:30. Third grade recess is at 12:00.
Open House
This Spring activity is scheduled
for staff, students and parents to share student activities school
wide. It is a night of opportunity to showcase student work in various
forms; written, artistic, or project-based. Spring 2002 will have
an overarching theme, Reading. The school has planned events that
promote reading as a life-long skill.. Young Authors, a PTA
sponsored student activity, will be featured as well.

School Wide Title
School wide Title Support offers a change
in the process in which we continue in our efforts to provide high
academic standards for all children through instruction that more
closely fits individual needs. Under this new process, Special
Education, Second Language Programs, Title/Learning Assistance Reading,
and Academic Support teachers will be working cooperatively to provide
reading and math skills in a blended program support mode. The
students are screened to focus their individual needs in
the School wide Title setting through grade level screenings, district
wide skill development assessment ((MAP), and classroom teacher input.
Science Fair
Student Responsibility Plan
These behavior expectations have been
developed by students and staff in the best effort to sustain a safe
and healthy school environment. The contents of this document will be
taught to the students by their classroom teachers, paraprofessionals
and supported by the building principal, prior to it being sent
home. It is in effect on a daily basis and will be reviewed with
the students whenever necessary, but at a minimum of once quarterly.
