MSD School Board Minutes - 01/02/2002
Board Meeting Minutes CALL TO ORDER/FLAG SALUTE/INTRODUCTIONS The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Mary Mattison, Board Chair. Board members in attendance were Mary Mattison, Judy Boxx, Charlie Crabtree, Sheri Folsom and Rob Olson. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. ACCOUNTS PAYABLE The accounts payable register for the district was approved on a motion by Rob Olson that was seconded by Judy Boxx. EDUCATION TOPIC - Retention/Promotion/Accountability Mr. Dickerson presented an overview of issues related to the development and implementation of a policy and related practices regarding student promotion and accountability. Guiding principles and concepts that were identified by the I-728 Committee on Extended Learning Opportunities were reviewed. Example policies and related documents from the Nooksack Valley School District were examined and discussed. Board members expressed a positive interest in the possible development of similar policy for the Meridian School District in the future. Board members agreed that it is important to involve parents and staff members in discussions and planning toward the development of a policy. It was also noted that successful implementation of an accountability/promotion policy will depend on the establishment of an effective system of assessment of student learning that is aligned with state and local learning standards. Judy Hossner, Meridian Middle School Principal, presented a report on ideas developed by staff at the middle school to provide academic support for students not meeting standards and to establish accountability for progress leading to promotion from one grade level to the next. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:31 p.m. by Chair Mary Mattison. |
