This weekly update includes information from the District Office and department staff regarding District operations and reminders.  It does not include updates or activities from each school site.

Office of the Superintendent:

Strategic Plan Goal 2.1 - Please see the District’s Strategic Plan Goal 2.1 below regarding closing the achievement gaps that exist between students in our schools.  Please have conversations with your building Principals and colleagues regarding how to work together as a school to reduce these gaps. 

GOAL (2.1):  By 2023, improved student supports will be implemented to raise the performance of non-white students, students who qualify for free/reduced lunch, English language learners and students with disabilities in order to reduce by 50% current achievement and performance gaps between White and Non-White students; students who qualify for free/reduced lunch and those who do not; English language learners and native English speakers; and students with disabilities and those without disabilities as measured by the OSPI Performance Indicators and state assessments in the following areas:


  • 3rd grade reading
  • 5th grade math
  • 9th grade course failure rates
  • On-time and extended graduation rates
  • Chronic absenteeism rates
  • Suspension and expulsion rates

School Board:

Next Regular Board Meeting - The next regular School Board meeting is at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. Board meetings are held in the Professional Development/Board Room at MHS.  All staff members are invited and welcome to attend School Board meetings.   Meeting agendas and minutes can be accessed via a link from the District web site or at http://www.boarddocs.com/wa/msdwa/Board.nsf/Public

Business Office: (Daniel Yorton, Director of Business Services)

State Auditors - The Washington state auditors will begin conducting an audit of the District’s financial statements next week.  They will be in the District conducting the audit from 2/14 – 3/2.  They will be reviewing the District’s financial statements as well as federally funded special programs. Human Resources: (Kurt Harvill, Director of Personnel, Grants and Risk Management)

Board Policy 5253 Maintaining Staff Student Boundaries - Last week the School Board approved an update to Policy and Procedure 5253 -  Maintaining Professional Staff Student Boundaries.  Please familiarize yourself with this updated policy and procedure as it provides guidance around communication between staff and students.  

MEA Professional Development Grant - In collaboration with MEA the District is opening the Spring Professional Development Grant application window for certificated staff.  The spring allotment is $5000. The grants awarded last spring and the two grant cycle openings this year will make the total awarded $18,000. 

Please submit a letter of proposal to the district office by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018.   Proposals should include how the grant will help professional growth as a teacher/counselor/ or other certified staff and include all associated costs.  These grants are appropriate for content-based professional development, outside workshops and conferences, etc.  Priority is given for those applicants who are working on their Professional Certification process. 

Special Services: (Dr. Carolyn Jenkins, Director of Special Services)

Technology Support - Kudos to Joe O'Brien for assisting with a technology set-up for a unique instructional situation. Delivery of Special Education Services can sometimes be challenging and Joe's "can do" attitude and knowledge made the team's work a bit easier this week. Thanks Joe!

Maintenance: (Brian Stephan, Maintenance Supervisor)

Work Orders - Reminder that if you have a work order request, please contact your building custodians or the school secretaries so they can input the work order into our School Dude work order system.

Employee Parking – Please only park in designated parking areas.  Please do not park in fire lanes, on the grass or other non-designated parking areas.  Thank you.
