This weekly update includes information from the District Office and department staff regarding District operations and reminders.  It does not include updates or activities from each school site.

Office of the Superintendent:

End of the Year Recognition Events – Thank you to all of you who coordinated the special student recognition events, programs and activities that were provided for our families and our community as we end the school year.  I was able to attend many of these and I am very appreciative of all of your effort and all of your time. I know things don’t happen by magic but rather through your hard work and dedication to our students. On behalf of the District, the Board of Directors, the parents, grandparents and community members I want to say, “Thank You!”

Buildings and Grounds – In Meridian we all are able to take pride in our campuses thanks to Dennis Mallahan and Tom Mallahan in the grounds department and our school custodial staff. Throughout this spring they have kept our school buildings and grounds in great shape! We appreciate their work.

Legislature Begins Third Special Session – Still No Budget Deal – As the legislature continues to be in a stalemate over the biennial state budget, school districts (including Meridian) continue to wait for financial information to be able to develop an annual operating budget for the 2017-2018 school year. If the third special session extends beyond June 30th there will be a partial shutdown of state government which could include a freeze on funding to school districts. In the event that no budget deal is reached by June 30th we will keep you informed via e-mail as to what is happening and what impacts we may see in Meridian.

School Board:

Next Regular Board Meeting - The next regular School Board meeting is at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. Board meetings are held in the Professional Development/Board Room at MHS.  All staff members are invited and welcome to attend School Board meetings.   Meeting agendas and minutes can be accessed via a link from the District web site or at http://www.boarddocs.com/wa/msdwa/Board.nsf/Public

Special Services: (Dr. Carolyn Jenkins, Director of Special Services)

Summer Rest - Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. (John Lubbock)

May we all take some time to rest and be idle this summer, for it is how we recharge our energy for the coming year. May all your adventures be amazing!

Business Office: (Daniel Yorton, Director of Business Services)

Thank you - Thank you to staff for all of the hard work keeping the finance side of the district running!  Thank you for creating purchase orders and requisitions, completing daily deposits, monitoring budgets, reconciling accounts, and all of the other day to day financial activities.  Thank you to the Accounts Payable department for ensuring all of our bills are paid for the precise amount required and paid timely.  Thank you to the payroll department for making sure all of our employees are paid accurately and on time.

Transportation: (Mark Dennis, Transportation Supervisor)

450 Trips - As we bring the year to a close I would like to thank the transportation staff for their continued good work.  In addition to the daily transportation to and from school, our drivers fulfilled about 450 bus trip requests this year.  This is a significant number considering we only have 12 regular drivers and a handful of substitutes.  It is also noteworthy that we had no serious bus collisions or incidents, again reinforcing that riding a school bus is THE SAFEST mode of transportation for our youth.

On behalf of the Transportation Department, have a fun and safe summer.
