This weekly update includes information from the District Office and department staff regarding District operations and reminders.  It does not include updates or activities from each school site.

Office of the Superintendent:

One Last Parent Contact – With the school year coming to a close, please make one more effort to talk with the parent/guardian of each of your students.  Let them know about any specific things they should celebrate about the progress their child made during the school year.  You can also discuss specific, individualized activities they can do with their child to help them be ready for school in August.  These should be differentiated based on each individual child. Please make a personal contact rather than sending home a generic letter.  Generic letters have much less impact than a personal phone call or face-to-face discussion.  Close working relationships with the parents/guardians of your students matter and they have a direct impact on individual student achievement.  Thank you for your efforts in this area of your professional work.

End of the Year Self-Reflection – Last August I asked each of you to identify one thing that you would like to improve in your professional work this year.  I asked you to be public about it and to share your goal with at least one other person.  Please take the time now, at the end of the year, to do a bit of self-reflection.  Did you make the improvements you wanted?  If so, celebrate and tell other people about your success.  You deserve some recognition.  If not, then you should decide on how you can make the goal-setting process actionable next year.

School Board:
Next Regular Board Meeting - The next regular School Board meeting is at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, June 27, 2018. (Please note the Board meeting on June 13th has been canceled.) Board meetings are held in the Professional Development/Board Room at MHS.  All staff members are invited and welcome to attend School Board meetings.   Meeting agendas and minutes can be accessed via a link from the District website or at http://www.boarddocs.com/wa/msdwa/Board.nsf/Public

Special Services: (Dr. Carolyn Jenkins, Director of Special Services)

Thank You - Thank you for the work you do for all our students. It has been my honor to walk with you as we worked together in ensuring all students had equal opportunities for academic success. Each of you contributes to that success and each school day you made a difference in your students' lives.

Our words and deeds have the power to positively or negatively impact a life forever. Think back to those adults in your school years whose impact you can still recall and when opportunities arise, choose to model what was said and done that made a positive difference in your life. Best wishes as you journey forward in your careers and remember, your work lives on in your students, even when you move on to new adventures.

Transportation: (Mark Dennis, Transportation Supervisor)

Summary of Bus Trip Requests for 2017/18 - I would like to extend my thanks to all of the people in the Transportation Department for their hard work this year.  We had several staffing issues, but once again the team pulled together to get our students to and from school safely every day.   We also answered 440 sports and field trip bus requests this year, all with less than 20 drivers.  In fact, in keeping with tradition, we did not deny one single trip request.

Additionally, I would like to thank the rest of the District for their patience as we juggled, shifted, rotated and moved staff around to make sure our daily routes kept out on the roads.   So "Thanks Again" to all of you.

Technology: (Joe O’Brien, Technology Supervisor)

Summer Reminders - As you approach the last week of school, the technology team is gearing up for summer.  Thankfully, there are no new buildings or mass classroom moves as we have a full summer list.   A few items that I want to call your attention to:

  •  Please do not leave your District-assigned laptop in your classroom over summer.  Items like this tend to disappear if left unattended.  If you do not want to take it home for the summer, please drop it off at the District Office and we will store it in a secure location until fall.
  • For staff not returning in the fall, I wish you the best in your future endeavors.  Please return any District devices (laptops, cellphones, iPads, Chromebooks) to the District Office on your last day.
  • Please take a look through your classroom and make sure all Chromebooks and iPads are returned to their cart.  Please make a pile of any random technology (mice, keyboards, extra headphones, etc.) that may have collected in your classroom; we will be collecting those and recycling/repurposing them.
  • Continuing our Windows 10 roll-out, we will be updating all Classroom Multimedia Computers.  All computers will be backed up prior to updating, so we will make sure to have a copy of any files on your computer.
  • We will be performing backups and system updates to all (84) of our district servers as well as our wireless.   We will email out a few days warning for anything that will impact services.

Thanks All, have a great summer!

Business Office: (Daniel Yorton, Director of Business Services)

2018/19 Purchase Orders - 2018/19 purchase orders (POs) are now open.  There are a few things to keep in mind when entering 2018/19 POs.  Please see below:

  • When ordering from KCDA, you can enter the date you would like to receive your order (delivery date). Please ensure you are setting this date to sometime when the secretarial staff are in the building and available to receive orders. Usually the appropriate delivery date would be mid-to-late August.
  • For all other vendors, you can enter the PO in the system, but not actually make the order until August.  Basically, go through the PO process as normal and get the paper copy of the PO from Cathy Boehringer (Accounts Payable), but do not fax, email, or phone in the order until August.
  • On the Requisition Master Information (first page when entering your PO) look towards the bottom for the “Ship Date”. This is the field where you tell the vendor when to ship your order (especially with KCDA). Non-KCDA vendors may not notice the “Ship Date” on the PO, so please enter the ship date in the description box as well.
  • When completing the description field for 2018/19 POs, please specify 2018/19 school year order. For example, “18/19 school year classroom supplies” or “2018/19 school year office supplies”, etc.
  • Also when entering the PO in Skyward, please make sure the “Fiscal Year” dropdown box has the appropriate year. Either 2017/18 or 2018/19 depending on what budget year you are charging.

Please contact Cathy Boehringer, Accounts Payable, or Daniel Yorton, Director of Business and Finance, at the District Office with any 2018/19 purchase order questions.

My Favorite FLOTUS Quote of the Week:  “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” (Eleanor Roosevelt)

It has been fun to utilize quotes this year from First Ladies of the United States.  I found that some First Ladies were more prolific in making public statements than others and that those from the last 60 years or so had their statements more in the public record.  Eleanor Roosevelt, Lady Bird Johnson and Barbara Bush had plenty to say and yet finding quotes from others like Helen Taft or Julia Grant proved to be harder. I hope you enjoyed them.
