GRADE 1

GOAL:  The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics.

Washington State

Essential Academic Learning Requirements

Meridian School District Math Framework

Assessment Strategies

The learner will:

1.1 Understanding apply  concepts and procedures from number sense

BENCHMARKS

Number and Numeration

Use objects, pictures, or symbols to demonstrate understanding of whole and fractional number systems, and place value in whole numbers.

Identify, compare and order whole numbers and simple fractions

Demonstrate and understanding of the properties of the whole number system.

Computation and Estimation

Show understanding of whole number operations (+, -, x, ¸) using blocks, sticks, beans, etc.

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers

Use mental arithmetic, pencil and paper, or calculator as appropriate to the task involving whole numbers

Identify situations involving whole numbers in which estimation is useful

Use estimation to predict computation results and to determine the reasonableness of answers, for example, estimating a grocery bill

To meet this standard the learner will:

1.1

Counts objects to 99.

Counts by 1’s to 100.

Counts backward by one from any number less than 100.

Uses concrete materials to organize groups of ten.

Identifies the place value name of digits in numbers to 100

Creates and records groups of tens and ones to 100.

Identifies a two digit number represented by groups of tens and ones.

Compares and orders numbers to 99.

Identifies ordinal numbers to 10ths.

Uses a pair of numbers to identify which number is greater or less.

Identifies most and fewest

Counts by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s to 100.

Writes numbers to 99.

Recognizes odd and even numbers.

Identifies numbers that come before, after, and between a given number.

Uses one-to-one correspondence to determine than another set.

Uses “acting out strategy” and concrete property of addition (a+b=b+a).

Adds three numbers to discover the associative property of addition (a+b)+c=a+(b+c).

Recognizes the zero property of addition (n+0=n).
