The
learner will: Understand and apply concepts and procedures from number sense BENCHMARKS
Number and Numeration Understand and use properties and symbolic representations of rational numbers Explain the magnitude of numbers by comparing and ordering rational numbers Understand concepts of and use processes involving prime and composite numbers, factors and multiples, and divisibility Understand and apply the concepts of ratio and both direct and indirect proportion. Computation
Understand operations on rational numbers Compute with rational numbers, powers, and roots Use mental arithmetic, pencil and paper, calculator, or computer as appropriate to the task involving real numbers Estimation
Identify situations involving whole numbers in which estimation is useful Use estimation to predict computation results and to determine the reasonableness of answers, for example, estimating a grocery bill |
To meet this standard the
learner will: 1.1 Find patterns to discover greatest and least sums of two digit numbers from four unique digits Define concepts of opposite operations and distributive property Use factor tree to demonstrate prime factorization Use number line to compare rational and irrational numbers Use power of ten notation and simplification of square roots to combine like terms Use rule of rounding to mentally calculate estimates Write and solve real life problems using whole numbers Estimate distances and apply to equations to solve using rules of distributive and associative properties. |

The
learner will: Understand and apply concepts and procedures from measurement BENCHMARKS
Attributes
and dimensions
Understand how changes in dimension affect perimeter, area, and volume Measure objects and events directly or use indirect methods such as finding the volume of a cone given its height and diameter Calculate rate and other derived and indirect measurements Approximation
and precision
Understand that measurement is approximate Estimate to predict and determine when measurements are reasonable, for example, estimating how much paint is needed to paint the walls of a classroom Systems
and tools
Understand the benefits of standard units of measurement and the advantages of metric systems Select and use tools that will provide an appropriate degree of precision, for example, using kilometers vs. light years |
To
meet this standard the learner will: 1.2 Use metric and English units of measure to find greatest area given
fixed perimeter Use formulas to calculate areas and volumes of geometric objects from
investigative measurements. Experiment with ball and cart to derive distance formulas, rate and
units of velocity Deem appropriate units- comparing metric and English units of measure
using ruler, meter stick, yard stick, fifteen meter tape and micrometer Measure items in meters, centimeters and millimeters- comparing results
and estimation of measurements before activity |
