COMPASS (Creating Opportunities in Meridian for Parent and Student Success), our school district’s new 21st Century Community Learning Center has been in operation since October 2003. COMPASS is an extended day program for students in which they receive academic help, build social skills, and connect families with the school community. The district received the grant as one of just three Community Learning Center programs in our county. The grant is for 5 years, and provides funds for staff, buses, food, and supplies.
Over 90 students at Ten Mile Creek Elementary and Irene Reither Primary School stay after school several days each week for up to two hours. They receive a snack, play games, and get help with academic work, and build basic skills in small groups. A special emphasis is placed on Math and Reading improvement. In addition, students gain a connection to other caring adults in the school community.
Through a partnership with WSU 4-H after school, students have a choice of units to explore with lots of hands-on activities. Other partners in the program are Whatcom County Parks who provide monthly field trips, Catholic Community Services with counseling assistance, and Western Washington University who provide intern volunteers.
