HIGHLY CAPABLE PROGRAM
Meridian school District recognizes the value, needs and talent of individual students. Our program stresses higher level thinking skills, problem solving, and creativity development. It also aids the student and teacher in academic extensions coordinated with their core curriculum.

Program Goals:

  • To help the highly capable child develop leadership, group interaction, communication skills and enrich mental peer relationships
  • To stimulate problem solving skills, enhance critical and creative thinking and higher order thinking skills.
  • To enhance academic opportunities tied to the core curriculum through differentiated instruction, academic investigations, and self-directed independent research studies.
  • To assist the core teachers in differentiating instruction for the high ability student to be challenged in the core curriculum.


Identification:
Students are identified for this program by above average ability in three areas:

  • Advanced academic ability
  • High creativity
  • Task commitment

Eligibility is measured through teacher recommendations, achievement data, and cognitive ability testing.

 


Services provided:

  • In class assistance to differentiate the curriculum for more able learners.
  • Direct instruction during the day of multi-grade, highly capable students for designated blocks of the school year.
  • Off site enrichment for a larger group of talented students.
  • Summer enrichment opportunities.
  • Organized competitions and investigations.
