Public Health Alert

March 28, 2014

Dear Parent or Guardian,

An unimmunized child in Whatcom County tested positive for measles this month after being exposed to the virus at a private school in Canada. There is currently an outbreak of measles in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia which is located just north of the border. As of March 26, 2014 British Columbia Health Officials reported 237 confirmed cases of measles. The majority of the cases are related to a private school that has a very high number of unvaccinated children.

State Assessments Are Coming

The State of Washington is replacing the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) test with the Smarter Balanced Assessment beginning in the 2014-15 school year.  The purpose for this change is to better align annual testing with the new Common Core State Standards curriculum being implemented throughout the state.  Meridian Middle School is field testing the Smarter Balanced Assessment this spring for the Meridian School District in order to familiarize ourselves with the new test before it becomes mandatory next school year.

The College Bound Scholarship Program

The College Bound Scholarship Program provides hope and incentive for students and families who otherwise

might not consider college as an option because of high tuition costs.  This scholarship program is designed to

cover the costs of tuition, fees and books for low income students.

Low income 7th and 8th grade students who sign a pledge by June 30th of their 8th grade year are eligible.
