Irene Reither Primary (Bronze)

Ten Mile Creek Elementary School (Bronze)

Ten Mile and Irene ReitherPrimary Schools are making national news by working to support and improve the health of our children and our community. As part of their effort, healthy items are featured on their menus and physical education and activity emphasized. Their efforts are part of the HealthierUS School Challenge.

The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary national certification initiative for schools participating in the National School Lunch Program.  It supports First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign by recognizing schools that are creating healthier school environments through their promotion of good nutrition and physical activity.  Sponsored by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), the initiative encourages all schools take a leadership role in helping students to make healthier eating and physical activity choices that will last a lifetime.  Schools, such as Ten Mile and Irene ReitherPrimary, that champion the HUSSC work hard to make changes to their school nutrition environment in order to (1) improve the quality of the foods served, (2) provide students with nutrition education, and (3) provide students with physical education and opportunities for physical activity.  The Ten Mile and Irene ReitherPrimary School qualified for the Bronze. Schools awarded receive a monetary incentive (Bronze $500 an award plaque signed by a USDA official, a banner to display in their school, and their name listed on the Team Nutrition Web site.

To qualify for an award, a school must submit a formal application and meet basic criteria set forth by the FNS.  The HUSSC criteria reflect the recommendations of the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published recommendations (April 2007) for foods that should be served in schools, outside of the organized school lunch meals.  HealthierUS Schools must also have a local school wellness policy, as mandated by Congress.  Schools receiving a HUSSC award commit to meeting the criteria throughout their four year certification period.

 Irene Reither Primary School Library
Mission Statement

The goal of the library is to ensure that staff and students are effective users of ideas and information. We emphasize literature so that students become lifelong readers. Our goal is to help all children see themselves as effective readers who can become independent readers. Literacy enrichment in the library supports the Open Court Reading program. Integrated in this program is 6-Traits Writing Model.

All students visit the school library weekly for library instruction, story and book selection. We encourage students to choose one book at their reading level. Non-fiction materials are encouraged to broaden learning styles and interests.

Highly Capable:

Math Club: Students in our Math Club have been working hard to learn challenging math. We are fortunate to have parents, John Bosche and Damon Vandentop, leading and teaching our students. The club will resume in January and students will have the opportuntiy to compete this spring. Students newly qualified for Highly Capable will be invited to join.

After School Classes: Please check back for information on our winter trimester offereings. Our fall after school class has been a hit! Thanks to Mr., DePeralta and our highly capable students for participating and working hard beyond the school day.  GO TO THE LIBRARY

A Message from Robin Youngquist,

IRPS Volunteer Coordinator

This year is already proving to be a great year with awesome volunteers! So many of you have stepped up for several projects in the short time since the beginning September. The high level of your dedication and reliability is clear to us here at IRPS. Thanks so much for all you do.

In the coming months we will have staff who require volunteer help with listening to students read, making copies for class work and other projects, book fair and tasks that you can help with at home. We have some needs that are one time events and some that are needed weekly. If you feel like can spare some time to help please know that the staff and students would love to have your presence in our school.
Just contact me anytime at 398-2111, or send me an email at ryoungqu@meridian.wednet.edu. I look forward to getting to help you feel comfortable spending time here.

Breakfast!  Don't leave home without it.

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day for all of us, but especially for our children. Since the 1950s - studies have verified that children who eat a healthy breakfast - learn faster, retain more, perform better, and have fewer mood swings and behavior problems. What our children eat is as important as that they eat. A healthy breakfast should include some protein and some fiber, and be low in fat and sugar.

IRPS serves breakfast every morning! ALL children who qualify for free or reduced lunch also qualify for free or reduced breakfast!
