Reading: All students will be working in the Open Court series. The second grade book focuses on developing reading fluency which leads to greater comprehension and enjoyment of reading and the ability to use reading skills and strategies for inquiry and research. The Open Court series is a comprehensive reading, writing and learning program.

All students will be given the state mandated DRA test in the fall to determine if they meet the state standard in reading. Results will be discussed at conference time.

Library: Our library day is Tuesday.  Children may check out three books, but two books must be kept at school.

Book orders: Children have the opportunity to purchase books inexpensively through the Lucky Book Club. Bonus points are used to purchase books for our class library.

Language: Language and grammar skills are incorporated into our Open Court reading program. The children also learn to use the Six Traits of Writing to increase their oral and written communication skills. Writing will stress the use of the writing process.

Spelling: We use the SRA spelling lists, but practice blending strategies from the Open Court reading lessons.  The students receive about 15 spelling words to study each week. List tests are on Friday.  Children should study for 5–15 minutes nightly or as needed.  Our goal is for the students to build an effective writing vocabulary.

Students who consistently score high on weekly tests and spell accurately on daily work will receive lists generated from their own writing after fall conferences.

Mathematics: Our focus in Mathematics is building students' conceptual understanding in the areas of number sense, measurement, geometric sense, probability, statistics, and algebraic sense. Within these mathematical concepts we emphasize problem solving, reasoning and communication. Students are taught to answer math questions with pictures, words, and numbers. We integrate other subject areas into our math lessons.

Handwriting: Manuscript printing is practiced and used.  Correct pencil grasp and letter formation is encouraged.

Science: The two science kits we will be working with this year are Balance & Motion and New Plants. We emphasize conceptual understanding and scientific inquiry.

Art: Our art lessons will focus primarily on famous artists throughout history. We will examine each artist by studying their biography and through a hands-on project. This year we will also be creating some craft projects.

State law requires we only offer snacks that have zero transfats.

Holidays:   There will be two major parties in class this year.  We celebrate Halloween and Valentine's Day. If your family does not celebrate these holidays, please let us know.  Sign up sheets for helpers and items to donate items might come home before each party.
