Mrs. Ballard's Class

Line

You are your child's first educator.

"How was school today?" "Fine."
"What did you do?" "Nothing."

These are age old questions and answers. If you are struggling because these are the responses you hear don't worry. There are ways to improve communication.

In reading, for example, when you are reading with your child check the reading level of the book. This information is usually on the spine or on the back cover. Reading level will give you good information about how your child is achieving in reading skills and strategies. Ask your child questions like, "Would you want that character to be your friend?" or "What do you think is going to happen next?" to gauge comprehension.

For math, give your child a math problem like 13 +12 and see what they do. Ask how they figured out their answer. In class we say, "What was you strategy?" Play dice games that require addition and subtraction. Ask them questions that require math.

We have many more ideas and encouragement to give so feel free to talk to us. The first conference is a great opportunity to discuss specific ideas for your child.

Thank you again for all that you do for your child. At school we can see the efforts you are making: reading everyday for 20 minutes, studying spelling words, playing math games, making sure your child gets enough sleep, plenty of healthy food …
