Welcome We would like to welcome you to Irene Reither Primary School for the coming year. We are looking forward to assisting you in fulfilling your educational goals. IRPS has a history
of fine academic accomplishments. We expect you to meet the goals which have been set, to carry on the tradition and to make this a better place.
You can benefit by being actively involved in your classes and the programs offered. If you encounter difficulties, seek out any of our trained professionals, and we will do our best to help you. We are here to make your years in school as successful, yet educationally challenging, as possible.

worn to school. Clothing that promotes gang/drug related activity or behavior should not be worn to school.
Bare midriff, bare shoulders and shorts shorter than mid thigh are not appropriate. Tank tops may be worn if the strap is 3 inches wide. Spaghetti straps and flip flop sandals are not to be worn to school. Students must dress for the weather as they will be outdoors for recess. Hats and caps are to be worn outdoors only. If clothing is inappropriate, students will call home for a change of clothing.
Breakfast and Lunch Procedures Breakfast is $1.00 for students and $1.50 for adults. Lunch is $2.00 for students and $3.00 for adults. Reduced brakfast is 30 cents and reduced
lunch is 40 cents. Milk comes with lunch, or students may purchase milk separately for 50 cents.
Adults are welcome to eat lunch at school. Please let us know by 9:15AM if you are planning to eat with your child.
Attendance Regular and on-time attendance is a necessary part of a successful school program.
We do understand that illnesses and family emergencies arise. State law requires that a written excuse regarding an absence be sent to school with your child upon their return to class, or a phone call to the school to explain an absence If our school does not receive notice from authorized persons, we will call your home.
Library, Music, Computer Lab and P.E. Expectations The student's time with us is short and we need to use it wisely. Therefore, all classroom rules and expectations will be
discussed with the children on their first visit to music, library, computer lab and P.E. The rules will also be posted in the room. Students will be expected to follow the rules at all times.
There will be a zero tolerance policy for harming others, property damage, and profanity. Other inappropriate behaviors will receive 2 warnings. Those behaviors include disruptive
behavior, disrespect of teacher or peers, and not following directions. WARNING 1 – Verbal warning from the teacher. WARNING 2 – Removal from the class and conference with the
teacher. All specialty classes are places to work and learn.
Invitations, Gifts and Parties In the interest of sensitivity to the feelings and needs of our students, please do not bring gifts or invitations for parties, get-togethers etc. to
school. Students who don't get asked often feel quite hurt. Check with your child's teacher regarding their policy about classroom treats for special occasions.
School Day Our school day begins at 9:15 AM and ends at 3:30 PM. Students are welcome to school beginning at 9:00AM. Prior to that time, teachers are preparing for the day, attending meetings, and cannot supervise students. If you need to meet with your child's teacher, they are generally available before school at 8:45 and after school until 4:00. If possible, please make prior arrangements to meet with staff members to avoid conflicts with other scheduled meetings.
Room Parties, Fiestas, Special Food Events: To avoid potential risk of liability, it would be safer to use store bought baked goods, fruits and
vegetables.
Large amounts of food requiring cooking time should be prepared at the school kitchen where temperatures can be monitored. For kitchen use during school hours, please request services 2-4 weeks ahead.
Immunizations State law requires that elementary school children meet certain minimum immunization requirements or they will not be allowed to enroll or
remain in school. You must present proof that your children have been immunized against certain contagious diseases.
Exemptions may be obtained for religious and personal reasons, but attendance is curtailed in times of disease outbreak.
School Phone The telephone in the office is intended for business use. Messages for students may be taken by the office in an emergency or when it is essential for a student to
receive information. Students are not usually called to the phone. Students are permitted to use the phone only when necessary. Our school phone number is 398-2111.
Personal Belongings/Lost and Found Students are discouraged from bringing toys or other personal belongings to school. The school cannot be responsible for
damage or loss of those items. Students should not give other students their belongings.
Students must never take other students belongings. Game Boys are not allowed at school. All personal belongings including lunch boxes, clothing, school bags, and other school supplies should be clearly marked with the student's name. Our Lost and Found is in the multi-purpose room. Parents and students are urged to check it often.
Medication/Health Concerns When a student needs medications of any kind (including over the counter) while at school, even for a short time, Washington State regulations require a
special form signed by the parent and the doctor.
Forms for this purpose are available from the school office, or most doctors have a supply. The medication must be in the original container and well labeled. Medication is dispensed by the school office only. School offices are not allowed to give drops of any kind. Medication must be brought to school and picked up from school by a parent/guardian. Please inform the school of any problems that may interfere with your child's learning. Students must have a daily note if they cannot participate in physical education class.
Accidents and Illness Should sickness or injury occur at school, accurate information is essential. Please keep the school office notified of any address, phone or emergency number changes. Please do not send your child to school if they are running a temperature or have been sick to their stomach. It is better to wait until your child has been without fever for 24 hours, and your child seems up to a full school day, including recess. If a child is too ill to go to recess, then they should stay home. If your child is injured or becomes ill at school, you will be contacted. When a parent cannot be reached, the person listed on the student emergency card will be called. If this person is not available, we will use our best judgment in deciding what steps will be taken.
Class Placement Procedures Students will be placed in classes by the principal using information provided by parent, teachers and enrollment figures on or before May 30.
The utmost care will be taken to make the best match with student needs, learning styles and classroom environment. We will have a move up day at the end of each school year.
Emergency Drills During the school year we will be holding fire and earthquake drills. When the alarm bell rings, students should instantly become quiet and direct their attention
to their teacher. Students will receive instructions from their teacher as to the proper evacuation route.
After safely evacuating the building, students should remain quiet and listen for further instructions from their teacher. Students are not to re-enter the building without being directed by their teacher. In the event that a student is not with his/her class when the alarm sounds, they should leave the building by the closest safe route, and join their class at the designated safe location. In the event of a real emergency, please tune in to your local radio station for information. Please do not call the school, as phone lines will be needed for emergency contacts
Field Trips Our students are taken on educational field trips from time to time to supplement their classroom lessons.
Classes are accompanied by one or more teachers, and generally, additional parent volunteers. Information about such trips will be sent home prior to each outing. A special form is provided to secure parent permission for field trips. Without parental permission IN WRITING a student will not be allowed to go on the trip. While field trips are an important part of the curriculum, they are a privilege. In the interest of safety, students who behave inappropriately will not be able to accompany their class on field trips.

End of Day Check Out The end of the school day is a very important time for each class.
The teachers are recapping the day and filling the students in on any last minute information. Please be mindful of this time and pick your student up at 3:30. We ask that all parents/guardians sign their students out in the school office and wait in the multi-purpose room for them. If you will be picking your student up after school, please send a note to the teacher, or call our school office no later than 2:30.
Parent Orientation This event will take place in the Fall on September ______________. This evening is designed for parents only. This will give
parents time with the teachers to learn about their student's curriculum and expectations for the year.
Student Responsibility Plan This school year we will continue with our Irene Reither Primary School Student Responsibility Plan.
These behavior expectations have been developed by students and staff in the best effort to sustain a safe and healthy school environment. The contents of the document will be taught to the students by their classroom teachers, paraprofessionals and supported by the building principal. It is in effect on a daily basis and will be reviewed with the students whenever necessary, but at a minimum of once every trimester. Together, we will educate in a nurturing, challenging, and safe environment so that all students will have the knowledge and skills to be successful in school and in life.
Bus Transportation Our bus drivers need the parents' and students' support and cooperation to make this important part of the school day safe and successful. For the safety of all, bus
conduct must follow these five rules:
1 – Obey the bus driver at all times. 2 – Remain safely seated, speak softly, and use appropriate language. 3 – Respect people and property.
4 – Keep head, hands, and all objects inside the bus. 5 – Eating and drinking on the bus are not allowed.
Students who are unable to follow the rules may require further intervention by the
driver. Interventions may include phone calls to parents, school bus conduct reports, conferences with the principal, or suspension from the bus. Bus conduct reports will be sent home to inform parents of any
infractions.
The first offense is a warning, the second is five days off the bus, third is 20 days, and fourth is expulsion. Bus riding is a privilege, and it is expected that our students will take the responsibility to observe these simple rules.
BUS NOTES: If your child is to take a bus other than their regular bus, or go home by some method other than their customary mode, he/she must bring a note from home stating the alternate plans.
