IRPS Math Action Plan Outline 2007-2008

School Improvement Goal: Students will improve their knowledge and skills in mathematics.
Rationale: To increase student achievement based on GLEs, a rigorous mathematical program, and diagnostic
activities measuring growth over time.

Activities:
Steps to be taken.
What will occur?

Who is Responsible?
Who is involved?
Who will provide the leadership?  Who will do the work?

Timeline:
When will this strategy or action begin and end?

Resources Needed:
What existing and new resources will be used to accomplish the strategy?

Expected Impact:
What measurable change will be seen?

Monitoring Effectiveness:
For each activity, what formative evidence will be gathered to demonstrate progress?

1. Training trainers: building a peer to peer support system and creating a professional learning community using the STAR protocol model

  • PTL Facilitator
  • Curriculum Instruction & Assessment (CIA) Director
  • Math Team
  • Math specialist
  • K-3 teachers

Sept 2007

On-going 3--5  years

  • PTL STAR Protocol
  • ESD math problem consortium and NCTM memberships

Teachers will improve instruction that supports best practices. This will result in students constructing their own knowledge. .

Grade 1 -  Kathy Richardson Number Sense assessment
Grades K-3 - Grade level CBAs

2. Plan three Early Release staff development afternoons around FSiM – Number Sense

  • K-3 teachers
  • Judy McCourt
  • Liz Theirbah
  • Barb Woods
  • Staff
  • CIA Director

  • Barb Woods
  • FSiM materials
  • GLEs

Increased student achievement in concept development and application in Number Sense.

Student performance on pre/post FSiM diagnostic assessments. Anecdotal records of all student achievement in Number Sense based on FSiM diagnostic assessments.

3. Staff will analyze grade K-3 Fall Assessment scores focused on Number Sense, Measurement, and Probability strands. Based on that information teachers will design instruction.

  • CIA Director
  • Principal

Sept. 19, 2007 MAP re-training with Bruce

  • MAP Student Data
  • MAP Fall/Spring scores
  • K: FSiM "Get Me Task"
  • Grade 1: Pre-Post CBA

Sixty percent of the student population in grades K-3 will meet or exceed the norm groups' average growth in number sense, measurement, and probability strands.

Grade K-1 - Fall and Spring
Grades 2-3 - Fall assessment scores compared with Winter and Spring assessment scores

4. Involving families in mathematics:

  • Back to School Curriculum Night

5. Vocabulary Usage

  • Teach identified vocabulary per grade level
  • Assess student usage of vocabulary terminology
  • Staff
  • Principal
  • Students

Ongoing 2007-2008

  • GLEs
  • Review and update words by grade level
  • Teacher generated student assessment format form
  • Frayer Model

Consistent use of vocabulary in math discussions and written problem solving by teachers and students.

  • Grade level student assessments will be designed and administered.
  • Look for evidence of expected vocabulary in oral discussions and written assignments.

6. Staff will administer K-3 pre/post concept assessments to determine student learning levels and design instruction for differentiated instruction.

  • Staff
  • Principal

At the beginning and end of each concept.

  • Pre/post test
  • Pre/post data collection

Students will achieve at or above 80% on the post tests..

Staff will meet in grade levels to collaborate on test results to analyze trend data.

7. WASL like math practice

  • Staff
  • Students

Ongoing 2007-2008

  • Release items
  • NCTM memberships

WASL scores will increase by 20% of students meeting state standards.

Monitor 2008 WASL results and compare to previous year.

Procedures for Evaluating Progress Toward Goal:  Review results on MAP, WASL, FSiM Diagnostic Assessments, and CBA.
