Whatcom Museum of History brought their Native American Workshop to IRPS. The museum staff and parent volunteers worked with the 3rd Grade students as they went from station to station to learn about
Native American life.
Station 1- Woodworking- Students looked at tools- They used a wedge to split wood and an adze to carve out a log
Station 2- Steaming wood to make a bentwood box and a halibut hook for fishing
Station 3- Processing Cedar Bark- Students shredded and pounded bark to make it soft enough to use for clothing.
Station 4- Twining- Use the shredded and soak cedar bark to twist and twine to make string/rope.
Station 5- Spinning and Weaving- Students used a spindle whorl to twist and spin the yarn. Then they were able to weave on a real loom.
Station 6- Bentwood box cooking- The box was filled with water. Then hot rocks were placed in the box to heat the water. Salmon was added to the water to cook. Students each received a piece of cooked
salmon.
Thank you volunteers for making this experience possible!
