MUSIC

Line

We use the nationally recommended Silver Burdett Ginn Curriculum, "The Music  Connection." This is a rich curriculum which covers all the Essential Academic Learning Requirements in Washington State for music. Music lessons have the following components: singing, moving, listening, music reading and instrumental work. This gives each child a breadth of experience and enjoyment.

The second graders play the Battlewhackers in double and triple time.

Kindergarteners dance

The children are playing the tuned Whackers.

Music Vision Statement

Meridian School District will teach the skills and concepts related to the Washington State standards in a progression from K-8.  The theory substantiating this spiral curriculum approach necessitates a return to concepts introduced in the early grades and deepened in the latter grades.

Essential Academic Learning Requirements in Music

1. The student understands how music connects to other subject areas, life and work.

2. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to create, to perform and to respond effectively to music.

3. The student uses music to communicate ideas and feelings.

4. The student applies the creative process with music knowledge and skills to reason and solve problems

Bruners spiral curriculum ensures that learning in music occurs in a logical pattern.

The sections listed as K-1 activities are beginner level and can be progressed through more quickly with intermediate and more advanced children, but area vital foundation in the skill building process.

The aim at the intermediate (2-3) and advanced (4-5) levels, is to develop leadership for children so they experience the responsibility of musical choice.  This develops aesthetic awareness and their self-confidence and assurance in handling the medium of sound.
