My name is Cathy Arnold, and I am the instructor in the Irene Reither Primary School P.E. program. I am very excited about the opportunity to help all of the children at IRPS have a successful and positive experience in P.E.

We will begin the first trimester with locomotor and non-locomotor movement.  We will be exploring ways to move, pathways, use of space-general and personal, balance, body awareness, speed and levels. We will work with bean bags, hula hoops, jump ropes and participate in parachute activites. During the trimester and throughout the year the kids will participate in various group games and relays.

The second trimester we will focus on ball skills, gymnastics and station work,  With the gym set up in stations, the children can participate in a great variety of activites.  They are able to use our climbing frame and swing, climb the rope ladder, walk the balance beam and practice forward and backward rolls on our incline mat.  This also allows them the chance to be active with various small apparatus such as the bean bags, hoops, jump ropes, scooter boards, ring toss, ball and stick, balls, basketballs, hockey, and bowling. There is a lot of excitmenet in the gym when the stations  are in use! Later in this trimester we'll begin our unit on rhythm, folk dance and square dance.  Dance experience is a very positive way to teach children both awareness and control of movement and to help them hear and feel rhythm patterns.  Rhythmic activities can increase fitness, provide cultural awareness and develop social skills, as well as being a lot of fun!

During the third trimester, after we complete our unit on rhythm, folk dance and square dance, we'll then shift our focus on to soccer skills, softball, hockey, squareball, and kickball, as well as revisiting station work, parachute activites, and group games and relays.

In order for a child to give his/her best effort, he/she needs to come to class with a pair of tennis shoes and clothing that will not hinder physical activities. If a child has any health concerns that I should be aware of, please notify me and the office.

You are always welcome to visit us in the gym. Also, look for our special invitaion to our classroom folk dance presentations which will be held in the spring.  Thank you for the opportunity to work with the wonderful children of IRPS!
