AmeriCorps Literacy Tutors
Irene Reither Primary School is first and foremost a community. The teachers and staff welcome AmeriCorps tutors with open arms and hope that the tutors wish to be
involved. From Wednesday Treats in the staff room to warm conversations in the hallways, you know you belong to a tight-knit community.
Your primary focus as a tutor at IRPS is teaching basic phonics,
fluency and comprehension skills. While this could seemingly get repetitive, there are always the challenges of filling the individual needs of the children and of being creative within the existing curriculum. They
are at a stage in their development when you are given a tremendous opportunity to mold and enrich their attitudes toward reading and learning in general. And the kids are so cute and want to give you hugs and high
fives!
At IRPS we do not design and implement our own independent tutoring program. We collaborate closely with the Reading Specialist, the Resource Room teacher and the ELL Specialist to best suit the
students defecits and strengths. The Title 1 staff views you as part of their team and for the first six months you will be mentored by them, but as you gain knowledge and confidence in tutoring practices you will
be given more responsibility and space to work independently (though they are always there as your mentors for advice and direction as needed).
So if you're in the mood for making a huge difference in children's reading confidence and ability and perhaps becoming a very important person in the lives of many of them, this might just be the place for you.
