First Grade Curriculum
Literacy (Reading and Writing)
In Open Court Reading, phonics and comprehension skills instruction is balanced with reading "decodable" texts and quality literature. In addition to skills and strategies, children experience a
wide variety of literary forms and genres in a program that emphasizes reading, writing, thinking and oral language.
Handwriting
We emphasize correct pencil grip, paper orientation and letter formation. We use the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting series.
Spelling
We start the year with a review of letters and sounds. Our first spelling lists consist of letters and some simple sight words. These early lessons coordinate with the OCR instruction in
phonics. The children learn to blend sounds and write words with short vowel patterns. We begin using the adopted SRA series in January. A new spelling list will be sent home each
week.
Social Studies
The school district has adopted the Macmillan McGraw-Hill curriculum. Our first graders learn about families, communities, citizenship, careers and historic Americans. Character Education is also an ongoing part of Social studies.
Science
We will be using science kits from Foss this year.
These kits contain wonderful hands-on materials to help us study insects, weather, solids and liquids. The children will also learn about simple machines during one of their OCR themes
Math
Our current math curriculum adoption is Silver Burdett Ginn Mathematics which includes the following instructional areas:
- Exploring Numbers and Patterns
- Understanding Addition and Subtraction
- Introducing Basic-Fact Strategies
- Beginning Geometry and Fractions
- Patterns and Numbers to 100
- Beginning Money and Measurement
- Time and Probability
- Exploring Two-Digit Addition and Subtraction
