INSTRUCTIONS FOR SCIENCE CD LINK

On-line Databases for magazines/newspapers, audio-video, transcripts, encyclopedias, maps, books and images. (You can use these at home, too!)

Access MOST Databases through DIGITAL LEARNING COMMONS (DLC)You need to select our school and use the mascot password provided by your librarian.

These databases are available through the DLC site:

UMI Proquest and E-Library- (Both need separate IDs and passwords) connects you to magazine and newspaper articles, lists of books, access to audio and video files and transcripts of interviews and reports that you can search. Click on the Proquest/Elibrary bar after typing the user ID and password. Ask the librarian for the ID and password.

Nettrekker- Has links to educator evaluated websites. Broken down into topics, this site is easy to search and allows you to save your searches.

Facts on File- Has articles on World News, Issues and Controversies and Today's Science. Get the latest on the topics of today.

Corbis Images- Provides over 400,000 images available to download.

Grolier On-line- Is a great collection of on-line encyclopedias.

SIRS- Is a collection of searchable databases that have periodical articles about many different topics. It also includes a special Pro-Con collection on controversial social issues.

OTHER DATA BASES:

Accunet / AP Multimedia Archive. This is a collection of databases that allows learners of all ages and areas of interest to search photographs, audio sound bytes, graphics, and text spanning over 160 years of history. Instruction on how to use this resource is here.


Career Information

Occupational Outlook Handbook: This database is maintained by the US Department of Labor and includes much of the same information about selected careers as the Facts on File Database (above).

CareerCruising: Career Cruising is an interactive career resource designed for people of all ages. If you want to find the right career, explore different career options, or plan future education and training, you've come to the right place! (Needs ID and password)

WorkForceExplorer: Quality labor market information to help you make informed decisions about your career.

US Census Bureau: Statistics on just about everything in the US.

FirstGov: All kinds of great info on our government. (Check out the "for kids" site too!)

Supreme Court Decisions: Check out the backfiles and latest at the Supreme Court. These have the summarys, opinions, results on separate pages.

Supreme Court Decisions from 1893 to the present. Just click on the year and find it alphabetically. These have the entire text, opinions and results on one page.

The US House of Representatives and The United States Senate: The official webpages for our nation's lawmakers. Includes contact information and a calendar of legislative events.

USDA Agriculture/Crop Production page- Search here for information on all agricultural crops in the US by state and county.

Geographical Information

CULTUREGRAMS-Offers concise, reliable, and up-to-date country reports on more than 182 cultures of the world and US States. CultureGrams go beyond mere facts and figures to deliver an insider's perspective on daily life and culture, including the history, customs, and lifestyles of the world's people. The CIA World Fact Book- Includes information on geography, people, government, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues on all of the countries of the world.

National Geographic MapMachine- This site has every kind of map you might need from political to road to climate to topographic.

National Geographic Index: This index contains records describing each National Geographic Society magazine article, book, map, video, cd-rom, and more. Meridian's library has copies of most issues of National Geographic Magazine published since 1995. Use this index to find the date of the issue you need and then fill out a periodical request slip.
