Social Studies Our 6th grade Social Studies curriculum covers the Western Hemisphere, minus the United States.
6th grade students study both the French and Spanish cultures and how those cultures have affected life in Canada and Latin America. We study the ancient civilizations of the Inca, Mayan, and Aztec peoples. We also compare our own lives with lives of children living in Canada and Latin America. We have found in the past that we have more similarities than differences!
Language Arts We use the 6-trait writing process for our language curriculum. Revision and peer editing are two skills that we find challenging. Students spend some time each week reviewing and learning new grammar skills. These are then incorporated in writing assignments. Spelling is an integrated approach. Students have ten words each week chosen from other areas of the curriculum. They have a pretest, a posttest, and an assignment using the words each week.
Reading Our reading program in 6th grade is threefold: skills from our basal program, a reading workshop where books are self-selected,
and whole class novel reading, where our novels enhance and integrate with our Social Studies program. Emphasis in 6th grade reading is on comprehension, story analysis and encouraging students to read books with more complex plots.
