return to Galapagos Links

Started March 1 | Completed March 31

Statement of project

This interactive online project lets students participate in retracing Charles Darwin's explorations and discoveries of the Galapagos Islands. 6th graders will help direct the actual journey of a group of scientists and educators to answer questions, and participate in discussions about the geography, climate, plants, animals and effects of civilization on this fragile ecosystem.

Project Goals

  • to observe and participate in an online research project
  • to discover the geography and culture of the Galapagos  Islands
  • to join with other schools in research

Procedures
Each day students will monitor the progress of a group of  scientists exploring the Galapagos. Through a series of  interactive activities, students will be able to communicate with the scientists in the field. In the four weeks they will examine  Unity and Diversity, Stability and Change, Conservation and Destruction, and Solutions and Resolutions.

Expectations and Assessment
All students will be actively involved in research into the geography, culture, animals, plants, and environmental concerns of the Galapagos Islands. Students will be expected to use class time wisely, help plan the direction of the voyage, and contribute to their group's understanding of the topic.
