I came to Bellingham to go to Western Washington
State College and was lucky enough to get a job teaching 4th grade at Custer,
so we could stay in the area. I got my Masters degree in Educational
administration in 1971, and became a principal in the Mount Baker School
District in 1973. I was an elementary principal
there for 24 years, then became Assistant
Superintendent. I retired in 1999, and spent the next 3 years as an education
consultant, helping in school improvement efforts throughout the country. I
started work in the Meridian
School District in the
spring of 2002, as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.
Throughout my career, I have met and worked with a number of parents who
provided home-based instruction to their children. For most of that time,
state laws prevented much effective collaboration with those parents. In
2005, the law changed and made it much easier to develop a parent partnership
program. With the help of the Meridian School District and some dedicated
parents, the Meridian Parent Partnership Program was formed and was up and
running in February, 2006. My time at MP3 is generally the highlight of my
job, because I get to spend time with students and parents!
My wife, Linda, and I have
lived on Mosquito Lake Road
for over 30 years, and truly love rural Whatcom County.
I like to work around the house and garden, and have recently learned how to
sail. I am trying to spend more time in that pursuit. The last book I read
was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
