Math Lab Page
This class has been designed especially for students who have had struggles with mathematics for quite some time. We begin with the assumption that traditional math instruction has not worked very well for these students in the past so we are going to try something different. We have made many small changes that we believe will:
Standards of Work and Grades: Students must master and complete each and every assignment correctly. Only quality work is acceptable. Students will be allowed to complete, fix, or redo work that is not of high quality until it meets standard. Students who complete 95% the quality work by the last day of the class will receive a grade of “A.” Students who complete 90% of the quality work by the last day of the semester will receive a grade of “B.”
Tests: Students must correctly complete
each item on the test to pass. If do not achieve 100% on the practice test
or the regular test, they will need to stay after school and receive individual
help to master the items that were missed. This one-on-one help is vital
in improving skills.
Homework: Students should not need
to do homework unless they are sick for several days in a row. There is
plenty of time to complete all work in class.
Class Organization: Generally students will work individually or with their
partners on individual work sheets. Many of our projects require students
to work out of doors. Much work is done in pairs or small groups, however,
students do not receive group grades. Each project requires individual accountability.
How to reach me: You may call the
school at 318-2236 and leave a message. I am seldom available during class
time; however, I try hard to return all calls within 24 hours. You may
leave me an email at school (dshick@meridian.wednet.edu) or at home (dshick@cablespeed.com).
Also feel free to call me at home (360) 312-3003. Please do not call after

About Me: I have been in education
for 12 years, all at Meridian High School teaching everything from Basic
Math all the way up to Advanced Placement Calculus. My hobbies include poker,
fantasy football, and basketball.
