This project has two different parts. Use this sheet as your check-off to record the completed portions.
Assignment No. 1—Black History Newsletter
c Select a person from the list of prominent African Americans
c Fill out the pre-activity: Where Do I Start? Save it to your folder.
c Research this person, using Encarta Encyclopedia, Encarta Africana, and/or the Black History Links provided.
c Print only relevant information about your person from these sites.
c Cite your sources.
From your printed information, answer these questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why?
c Fill out the 5 Ws chart. Save it to your folder.

o Gather additional information that tells something important, unusual, or interesting about your person and his or her accomplishments.
c Write the first draft of your news story. Click here for additional information on how to write a news story.
§ Begin with a lead paragraph that gives an important or interesting detail
§ Write the next paragraph as the main portion of your story.
§ End your story by giving the reader something to think about.
c Review your story. Make sure that you have included all the important information and that all the facts are correct.
c Edit and revise your story. Make at least three changes in content and look for spelling, punctuation, etc. Include a headline, byline, and picture. I will give instruction on how to wrap text around your picture if you need it.
c Type your final copy. When you are finished save to your folder. Then print a copy and we will add it to the bulletin board.

c Using the interview worksheet, you will prepare yourself to be interviewed. You will pretend that you are the person that you researched and answer questions from the class as if you were that person.
c Schedule yourself for an interview time on the calendar.
c Practice and be ready for your interview when you are scheduled.

You need to have a visual aid for your interview, this
may be one of several things: costume,
poster, pictures, actual “things” that person was responsible for developing,
etc.
