Good Morning,

February is Black History Month
Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, is the annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. To better understand American history, we must also examine and recognize the experiences and history of Black Americans. We have provided two resources with information to learn more about Black History Month. The Black History Month 2021 theme, “Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity,” explores the African diaspora, and the spread of Black families across the United States.

History Channel
The History Channel shares content about the origins of Black History Month, this year’s theme, photo galleries, and a collection of related content.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.

Equity & Access Committee
In December I announced the development of a couple of committees to help us conduct the work of the district – driven by two main areas of importance. We are ready to accept applications for the Equity & Access Committee, which may be found by clicking on the linked title. They are due to our district office by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, February 23rd.

Mid-Winter Break & President’s Day
All Meridian schools and the district office will be closed Friday, February 12th, and Monday, February 15th in observance of Mid-Winter Break and President’s Day. Some families will be traveling during the Mid-Winter Break. We will not require a quarantine for any travel. It’s still a good idea and will certainly support your child(ren) remotely during that time if you choose to do so. Whether you quarantine after your trip is your family’s decision will not result in any restrictions to accessing school for your children if you elect to not have them quarantine.
