From the Principals

Dear Families,
Next week, students at MMS will begin the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA)! We’re excited to see their hard work pay off and look forward to the growth they’ll show after a year of dedication and learning.
To help your student be successful, please make sure they arrive each day with their school laptop fully charged. We have a limited number of loaner devices, and we want to reserve those for students with laptops that are out for repair. Also, a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast can make a big difference—thank you for encouraging both!
We appreciate your support in setting students up for success on these important testing days.

-Jill Hammack, Assistant Principal

We look forward to seeing you there!

Spring State Assessments Begin Soon

Spring state assessments for students in grades 3–8 and 10 will begin soon. These assessments help us measure student progress.
  • Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) will be used for English Language Arts (ELA) and math.
  • Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) will be used for science in grades 5, 8, and 11.
The results from these assessments will provide valuable information for both the school and families. They help us improve instructional practices, gauge student progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed. For grade 10 students, the Smarter Balanced assessments can also serve as a graduation pathway. Results are typically available in Skyward by September each year.
How you can help:
  • Ensure your child arrives at school on time each day during testing.
  • Encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast before testing.
  • Most students will take the assessments online using their Chromebooks. Please remind your child to come to school with their Chromebook fully charged.
Your school will provide specific details about the testing schedule and any other relevant information.

Info & Reminders

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

From Mental Health Coordinator Laura Lupo
Caring for our mental well-being is important for everyone, not just those with a diagnosis. The following self-reflection prompts are intended to encourage a healthier, more balanced mindset:
  • What aspects of your life can you choose to accept, rather than trying to change? How might this reduce your stress?
  • Identify something you dislike about yourself. What is the opposite behavior? Consider trying it for a day.
  • Instead of focusing on what you are grateful for, reflect on the difficulties you do not have to face. Does this shift your perspective?
  • If you are feeling unfulfilled, what is one small step you could take to create forward momentum?
  • Recall a time when you felt refreshed and energized. What elements from that time could you reintroduce into your current routine?
  • Acknowledge your progress. What is something that used to be a challenge but no longer is?
  • Reflect on a recent action that brought you joy. How might you incorporate it more regularly into your daily life?
Change is often difficult, requiring intention, patience, and persistence. Yet the effort is worthwhile. Growth rarely comes without challenge, and even small steps forward can lead to meaningful transformation over time.
