This traditional pow wow is planned by Native student youth leaders and celebrates Native American dancing, singing, arts and crafts, vendors, and food. Grand entries will take place at\u00a0<strong>1:00 PM and 6:00 PM<\/strong>, and the event is free to attend with free parking.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>All are welcome at this drug- and alcohol-free community event. A free community dinner will be provided. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and families to experience and celebrate Native culture and traditions in our region.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3>Comprehensive Sexual Health Education Lessons<\/h3>\n<div>\n<div class=\"s_typography-body\">\n<div>Students in eighth grade will be taking part in comprehensive sexual health lessons beginning April 27 in health class.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Parents and guardians may review the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/positivepreventionplus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Positive Prevention Plus curriculum<\/a>\u00a0and may remove their children from these lessons with a written request. (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.leg.wa.gov\/rcw\/default.aspx?cite=28A.300.475\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RCW 28A.300.475<\/a>).\u00a0Families who wish to opt their children out of these lessons must turn in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meridian.wednet.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Parent-Waiver-Form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opt-out form<\/a>\u00a0to the school office before the first day of lessons. We are busy working on planning our schedule and class offerings, holding transition meetings with other buildings as we prepare to receive the 5th graders and send off the 8th graders, and beginning to outline plans for how we will tweak and adjust systems next year to promote learning at even higher levels.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As part of this transition process, Meridian High School is inviting any current 8th graders and their families to an informational open house next Thursday, March 26 from 6pm to 7:30pm at Meridian High School. More information is below, but don&#8217;t miss out on this opportunity!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>For those of you who have 6th or 7th graders, you can expect information about class registrations in late April or early May this year. MAD HOPE (Making a Difference \u2013 Helping Other People Everywhere) partners with Whatcom County schools and is nationally recognized for using best practices in youth suicide prevention education.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>These lessons help students understand healthy ways to manage stress, recognize warning signs, identify trusted adults and resources, and learn how to seek help for themselves or others. We reviewed recent reading and math growth data and reflected on the instructional strategies that are making a difference, especially for students who need additional support. Teachers worked together to sharpen strategies that increase student engagement, check for understanding, and adjust instruction in real time. In the afternoon, teams applied that learning directly to upcoming lessons by refining assessments, planning reading supports, and ensuring stronger alignment across grade levels so that all students continue learning at high levels! MAD HOPE (Making a Difference \u2013 Helping Other People Everywhere) partners with Whatcom County schools and is nationally recognized for using best practices in youth suicide prevention education.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>These lessons help students understand healthy ways to manage stress, recognize warning signs, identify trusted adults and resources, and learn how to seek help for themselves or others. If your student already knows their transportation is different for the day (for example, they usually ride the bus but today you\u2019ll be picking them up), you do not need to contact the office.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Bus Change Requests<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>If your student is riding a different bus (such as going home with a friend), a written request from a parent\/guardian or a phone call to the office is required. Requests must be submitted to the main office before 2:00 pm.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Early Dismissals<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>The best way to ensure your student is ready for an early pick-up is to send a note in the morning. If you call instead, please contact us at least 10 minutes before pick-up time so we can transition your student to the office.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Pick-Up by Someone Other than Parent\/Guardian<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>If someone other than a parent, guardian, or emergency contact will be picking up your student, the office must hear directly from a parent. Being the first school ever to complete this drill in Meridian School District was a honor, but allowed us to set a high bar for excellence for MHS\/MP3 and IRE to meet when they eventually complete their own reunification practice. They followed instructions, stayed calm and moved through each step of the process responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s drill allowed us to practice important safety procedures we would use if students ever needed to leave school grounds during an unexpected event. By practicing evacuation, boarding buses, and returning to campus through a structured check\u2011in process, we can ensure that our school is better prepared and that students know what to expect should we ever need to do this for real.<\/p>\n<p>We know that drills like this are only effective when students take them seriously, and today they did exactly that. I\u2019m grateful to our staff for guiding students through each step and for their ongoing commitment to creating a safe learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you as well for your partnership.
