I understand that many of you may have questions about what comes next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>District Leadership Transition<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning July 1, the district will have stable and experienced leadership, with Dr. Kurt Harvill assuming the role of interim superintendent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Harvill has been with the district since 2011. Prior to joining Meridian, he taught social studies at Mount Vernon High School for 13 years, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here he also served as a dean of students and a wrestling coach. During his time at Meridian, Dr. Harvill has held several leadership roles, including assistant principal, athletic director, director of personnel, and most recently, assistant superintendent. He earned his Doctorate in Education from Western Washington University in August 2025. Dr. Harvill brings deep institutional knowledge, strong relationships and a student-centered approach to his leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have had the privilege of working closely with Dr. Harvill for many years, both as a colleague and a trusted friend. I am confident the district will be in good hands during this transition, and that he will continue to prioritize what is best for students, staff and families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Harvill would like to hear from staff, families and community members. If you have a moment, please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/meridiansd.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_0rH3MVMpXv3EErs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complete this brief survey.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>School Leadership and Staff Updates<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of April, we informed staff that a reduction\u2011in\u2011force (RIF) would not be required for the upcoming year. This outcome was achieved through careful budget reductions in materials and supplies, a deliberate focus on staff retention, and internal transfer requests and attrition. Below are staffing updates for next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Irene Reither Elementary (IRE)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week, we shared with the IRE community that Assistant Principal Nate Beede has accepted a social studies teaching position at Meridian Middle School for next school year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next year, IRE will be supported by two assistant principals. Rebecca Kratzig, Dean of Instruction, and Holly Li, Multilingual Learner Specialist and Administrative Intern, will serve in these roles. Mrs. Kratzig earned her administrative credentials from the University of Washington\u2019s Danforth Educational Leadership Program in June 2025. Mrs. Li is currently earning her administrative credentials at City University of Seattle, with completion expected in June 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Mrs. Kratzig and Mrs. Li step into these new roles, due to budget considerations, we are not filling the positions they are leaving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Meridian Middle School (MMS) and Meridian High School (MHS)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MMS social studies teacher Kristin Garlatz and school counselor Brett Muskavage will join MHS next year, filling vacancies created by the retirements of Steve Lawrence and Don McMains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We thank both Mr. Lawrence and Mr. McMains for their dedication to MHS and wish them all the best in retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to both budgeting considerations and enrollment levels at the middle school, next school year, MMS will have one school counselor. We will continue to have a mental health professional at IRE, MMS and MHS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Superintendent Search Process<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The school board will initiate a superintendent search process in the fall. The board will determine whether to partner with a search firm or conduct the process internally. Regardless of the approach, staff, families, students and community members will have opportunities to provide feedback and input, and I strongly encourage participation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, superintendent openings are posted during the winter, with interviews and selection occurring in early spring. The board will oversee the entire process and make the final hiring decision for Meridian\u2019s next superintendent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a reminder, we have a vacancy for Director District 4. Founded in 2006, MP3 partners with parents and certified teachers to create flexible, high-quality learning experiences that meet the needs of every child.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the anniversary, MP3 hosted a celebration on Jan. 20 featuring student work and a slideshow of community memories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor two decades, MP3 has shown what\u2019s possible when families and educators work together. This program is built on trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to helping every child thrive,\u201d said Principal Michelle Siadal.<\/p>\n<p>MP3 is a public K\u20138 Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) program within Meridian School District. As a parent partnership program, MP3 combines home-based learning with on-campus instruction and support from certified teachers. Parents provide primary instruction at home, while each family is paired with a certificated teacher known as a Student Learning Plan Consultant (SLPC).<\/p>\n<p>SLPCs support learning, monitor progress, and help develop a personalized student learning plan aligned to five core academic areas: math; reading\/writing; social studies; science; and physical education.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of each school year, SLPCs meet with families to create a student-centered learning plan using district-approved curriculum options. Parents select the curriculum that best fits their child\u2019s learning style with guidance from their SLPC. Throughout the year, teachers stay connected through weekly check-ins by phone, email, or Zoom, along with monthly reports aligned with state standards and learning goals.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to home-based instruction, MP3 offers on-campus courses two days a week. Students participate in enrichment and core academic experiences designed to complement home learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first went to the school, I was super duper nervous, but the teachers were all so nice that I quickly felt comfortable,\u201d MP3 student Joey shared.<\/p>\n<p>Classes are taught by certified teachers and designed to be collaborative and hands-on. Students in grades 1\u20138 attend a rotation of classes, while kindergarten students attend a half-day program with a cohort of peers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe many times I picked up my kids from school and they were talking over each other to share something fabulous they did that day at MP3 remains one of my favorite parts of the school,\u201d said MP3 parent Kym Franklin.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 20 years, MP3 has grown from its early days at Laurel Church to Ten Mile Creek Elementary and now to its permanent campus near Meridian High School. Throughout each chapter, one thing has remained constant: a strong sense of community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we celebrate MP3\u2019s 20th anniversary, one of my greatest joys as principal has been greeting our students each morning,\u201d Principal Siadal said. \u201cWatching students grow from curious kindergartners into confident eighth graders is a privilege I never take for granted. MP3 truly feels like a village where every child and family is known, welcomed, and supported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sense of community is echoed by alumni as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no way to pick just one memory,\u201d shared Victoria, a former student. \u201cThe teachers and students left such an incredible impression. If I had to choose, it would be the laughter during something as simple as taking our eighth-grade class photo. It\u2019s moments like that that make me miss MP3 and the environment our teachers created.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, MP3 serves families across Whatcom County and students throughout Washington state, continuing its mission of flexibility, partnership, and personalized learning as it looks ahead to the next chapter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am grateful for the meaningful connections built with families across the county. Partnering with parents in their children\u2019s learning is at the heart of who we are,\u201d Principal Siadal said. \u201cI feel incredibly fortunate to have worked alongside so many dedicated, passionate staff members over the years. Their commitment has made MP3 not just a school, but a community. Their essential work is often behind the scenes, but is felt in every classroom, every hallway, and every student\u2019s experience. They greet students with a smile, ensure our buildings and buses are safe, support learning in countless ways, grow a love for reading, keep our technology functioning, prepare nutritious meals, and provide the care and consistency that help students thrive.<\/p>\n<p>To all of our education support professionals: thank you.
