At MP3, students are expanding their horizons through meaningful connections with the world around them. Through strong community partnerships, they engage in unique learning experiences that link classroom knowledge to real-world careers and community impact. These opportunities empower students to see the relevance of their education and inspire them.

Principal Michelle Siadal explained this importance. “We want our students to understand that learning doesn’t just happen through textbooks, it happens through the people and experiences around them,” Principal Siadal said. “Partnering with local organizations helps students build empathy, respect, and a strong sense of belonging within the community they’re growing up in. We deeply appreciate Glenda Elgersma for her leadership in organizing these valuable experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom and strengthen our community connections.”

Local organizations are key partners in this work. The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office welcomes MP3 first graders each year to its Laurel substation, where students explore the difference between laws and rules, meet deputies, and learn what it means to be a good citizen. Deputies answer questions and give students a close look at the equipment and vehicles they use for their jobs. These visits bring civics lessons to life and help students see the value of community service.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue also partners with MP3 to provide educational experiences. This fall, firefighters brought the station to the MP3 campus, allowing students to tour an ambulance, meet a firefighter in full gear, and even use a fire hose. Firefighters also use this opportunity to talk about the importance of fire safety. These moments spark curiosity and connect classroom learning to real-world careers.

Community involvement doesn’t stop there. As part of a school-wide food drive and social studies unit on community, Don Kok from Project Hope Food Bank visited MP3 to talk with students about food insecurity and the importance of giving back. Students learned how local organizations support families in need and how they can contribute to their community.

These partnerships are coordinated by MP3 educators who understand the power of experiential learning. By connecting students with these professionals, they create opportunities to ask questions, explore careers and learn more about their community. Community partners enrich the experience for students, inspiring them to be thoughtful and engaged citizens. We’re proud of the collaborative spirit that makes MP3 a place where students thrive.
