MMS families,
One of the best things about school is that every year brings a fresh start. No matter how wonderful the previous year was or how many challenges it held, August gives everyone an opportunity to reset and look ahead with optimism. There is something exciting about the possibilities that come with a new school year, and we can’t wait to welcome our students back to share in that with us.
Behind the scenes, there has been plenty happening this summer. Our custodial and maintenance crews have been hard at work preparing classrooms and improving our campus. Teachers have already begun digging into professional learning for the year ahead. We’ve welcomed outstanding new staff members, and interview teams of both staff and students helped us find the very best people to join the Meridian family. Every day, the building starts to feel a little more like Meridian Middle School again.
As we have prepared for another school year, we have spent a lot of time talking about what we want our students to experience when they walk through our doors each morning. We want every student to know they belong here. We want them to feel safe, cared for, and challenged. We want them to understand what they’re learning, why it matters, and how they’ll know they’ve been successful. Most importantly, we want every student to believe they are capable of learning and growing, even when the work is difficult. We believe students do their very best learning when they know they belong, understand where they’re headed, and believe they are capable of getting there.
That vision doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of an incredible staff who cares deeply about kids, families who partner with us, and a community that believes every student deserves opportunities to succeed. We are grateful to be part of that partnership with you, and we look forward to continuing that work together this year.
Below you’ll find some important information to help your family prepare for the start of school. We’ll send another communication closer to the first day with schedules, drop-off and pick-up procedures, and other back-to-school reminders.
Until then, we hope you’re able to enjoy these last few weeks of summer. We hope they’re filled with time to relax, make memories, and enjoy one another before another exciting school year begins.

We’re excited to invite all MMS families to our annual All Sports Night on Thursday, August 20! This event is both a fun introduction to the sports we offer and the required pre-season meeting for all Fall sports.
Main Meeting: 7:00 PM in the MMS Big Gym
Fall Sports Breakout Sessions:
Fall sports coaches will meet with families in individual breakout sessions.
Winter and Spring Sports:
Information tables will be set up in the foyer for families to learn more, see gear, and connect with coaches.
Sports Physicals:
Families are invited to participate in a Sports Physicals Night at Ferndale High School on Aug. 18. Licensed doctors will be on-site to conduct sports physicals for $20 per student (cash or check payable to Ferndale High School).

Mark your calendars! Our annual Back-to-School Block Party will be held on Thursday, August 27 here at MMS. This fun welcome-back event is a great chance for students and families to reconnect with friends, meet staff, and get ready for the year ahead.
Suggested Times to Attend (to help with parking and hallway space):
- 6th grade & new families – 6:00-7:00 PM
- 7th & 8th grade families – 7:00-8:00 PM
- (If you have students in multiple grades, come at whichever time works best for your family.)
At the Block Party, you can:
- Pick up your student’s class schedule
- Meet teachers (please note, not all will be present)
- Tour the school & walk your schedule
- Turn in Free/Reduced Lunch paperwork
- Set up your locker (optional – bring your own lock with combination or spare key)
- Get answers to your questions
Food Trucks & Music!
Purchase dinner with friends before or after your visit. We’ll feature:
- MHS FFA Boosters
- Taco Truck
- Kona Ice – free for all MMS students!

We are excited to provide the opportunity for our 8th grade students to join their US History teacher Mr. Dennis on an optional but amazing trip to Washington DC in March 2027.
There will be lots of learning and fun as students sightsee their way through our nation’s capital including visits to the National Mall, our nation’s most important government buildings and Mt. Vernon. They’ll also have a chance to go to Philadelphia to check out Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written. Cost for the trip will include airfare, hotel, food, as well as the whole program including local guides. If your student is interested but this trip would be a financial stretch, please still attend the meeting and then email Mr. Dennis and we will do what we can to provide fundraising opportunities and possibly scholarships.

Please make sure your student has their supplies ready for the first day of school. If you’re having any trouble getting supplies, please stop by and check in with our school counselor during the Back-to-School Block Party event or Attend the Back-to-School Fair at IRE on August 19.

This summer, the Meridian Family Support Center’s Food Pantry and Clothing Closet will be open Wednesdays only, from 2:00–5:00 PM, for families and students enrolled in the Meridian School District.
We will return to regular hours on Thursday, August 20:
- Monday–Friday: 8:30 AM–4:00 PM
- Wednesdays: Open until 5:00 PM
- Location: Portable 400A on the Irene Reither Elementary campus
Starting August 17, families can:
- Pick up school supplies for students who qualify for free or reduced meals
- Sign up for Operation School Bell (new school clothes for Meridian students)
- Access the clothing closet (gently used adult and kid clothing)
If your student can’t make it to the Family Support Center for supplies, they can stop by the MMS office to get what they need.
