MMS families,
It was amazing to see so many families in the building this week, connecting with our teachers to set students up for a successful year!  If you weren’t able to make it in – we understand.  Take a quick moment to send a ParentSquare message to your child’s Homeroom teacher.  We’d still love to connect and hear more about what we can do to help support your student and family this year!
Students are continuing to build relationships and skills to be successful this year.  Pictured above, students in Megan Wolven’s math class completed team building challenges last week to learn about what good cooperation looks like.
On a more reflective note, today, Meridian Middle School joined communities across the country in marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. During our morning announcements, we paused to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, the families and communities forever changed, and the first responders and ordinary people who demonstrated extraordinary courage and service in the days that followed.
Several classes also marked the anniversary in a variety of subject-appropriate ways, giving students opportunities to learn about and reflect on an event that occurred before they were born but continues to shape our country and world today.
As a school, we connected this anniversary to the values we work to build in our students every day. Being caring, courageous, trustworthy, and open-minded includes learning from our history, showing compassion for others, and understanding the responsibility we each have to strengthen our community.
Students and staff concluded our morning remembrance with a schoolwide moment of silence. Twenty-five years later, we honor those who were lost while continuing to build a school community where every person belongs and we show up for one another.
As always, let us know what questions you have!
Go Trojans!

Launching “Meridian Reads”

This year, we are excited to launch Meridian Reads, a schoolwide read-aloud experience designed to help students make a calmer, more predictable transition from lunch and recess back into afternoon learning. At the beginning of sixth period each day, teachers will spend approximately ten minutes reading aloud from a shared book. There are no worksheets, quizzes, homework, or required discussions—and teachers will not be turning the books into additional lessons. The goal is simple: ten quiet minutes, one great story, and a school reading together.
In addition to helping students settle and refocus, Meridian Reads will allow students to hear fluent reading, build listening comprehension and vocabulary, and experience books simply for the enjoyment of a good story. Sharing books across classrooms will also give students and staff common characters, experiences, and conversations that can strengthen our sense of community and belonging.
Our sixth-grade students will begin with James Ponti’s City Spies, an exciting story about a group of young spies whose different backgrounds and talents make their team stronger. Beneath the action, mystery, and humor is a message especially fitting for students beginning middle school: There is a place for you here, and what you bring matters.
Our seventh- and eighth-grade students will begin with Gordon Korman’s Restart. After waking up with amnesia, Chase returns to school and gradually discovers that the person he was before his accident is not necessarily the person he wants to become. The story explores reputation, accountability, second chances, and an important message for our older students: Who you become is shaped by the choices you make.
Above all, we chose these books because we believe students will want to hear the stories. Our goal is not simply to select books students should read, but to find books they don’t want us to stop reading.

Supervision at Sporting Events

If your student plans to attend an MMS sporting event, please have them go home after school and return at the start of the event. We are unable to supervise students between the end of the school day and game time.
Please also note that school staff do not provide supervision during sporting events. Students must be accompanied by a responsible adult in order to attend. If a student remains on campus after school or arrives at a game without an adult, they will be asked to call home for a ride to leave the event.
These same expectations apply when middle school students attend high school sporting events. Students must always have a responsible adult present in order to attend.
Attendance Matters

Showing Up Matters: Show Up Prepared

A successful school day often starts the night before. Consistent routines help students arrive at school on time and ready to learn. Simple habits such as getting enough sleep, packing backpacks, charging devices, and planning for the morning can make a big difference. When students feel prepared, they are more confident and ready to make the most of their day. If you have questions about regular attendance or need support, we are here to help. Leave a comment or contact us.

Cold & Flu Season Approaching

Fall is quickly approaching and so is cold and flu season! Please help us keep our school community healthy by keeping your child at home when they are not feeling well. Keep your child home if they are experiencing any of the symptoms: fever or chills, shortness of breath, wet or productive cough, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, runny nose, nausea or vomiting or diarrhea.
We encourage regular attendance and students may return to school as soon as they are feeling better, and are fever-free for more than 24 hours without fever reducing medication. While in school, your student can help slow the spread of germs by covering their nose or mouth when coughing and sneezing, and washing hands frequently with soap and water.
Please contact your child’s school if they are going to be absent due to illness. If you have additional questions, please visit our Health Services webpage or contact our school nurses.

ConnectED: Public Library Access

We’re excited to continue our partnership with the Whatcom County Library System (WCLS)!
Through the ConnectED program, your student’s school ID can also serve as a WCLS library card, giving them access to books, eBooks, audiobooks, computers, and online educational resources at no cost.
No action is needed if you would like your student to participate, they will automatically be enrolled. If you do not want your student to participate, please complete and return the opt-out form provided by the school.
This program is separate from any WCLS library card your student may already have.
