As part of our ongoing commitment to safety, Meridian High School will practice an evacuation and reunification drill on Oct. 28. This is only a drill and no action is required from families.
Our district uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) developed by the I Love You Guys Foundation which provides common language and consistent safety procedures across all Whatcom County school districts and local law enforcement. Learn more about school safety in Meridian on our website.
What is a reunification drill?
A reunification would be needed if students and staff had to leave school grounds for their safety, for example, due to a fire, gas leak, earthquake, or other safety concern. Students would be transported to a safe location, and families would receive instructions on where to pick up their child. (During this drill, students will return to school and parents do not need to pick them up.) Learn more about reunification on the I Love You Guys website.
What to expect on Oct. 28:
- We expect the drill to take less than two hours.
- Teachers will review the purpose of the drill and the steps students will follow.
- Students will practice a shelter and evacuation drill.
- Students and staff will board a school bus with their homeroom class.
- Buses will leave campus, complete a loop in the district, and return to school.
- Staff will take attendance throughout the drill.
- Students will re-enter the school, check in with staff, and then return to classes.
Before the drill
Please talk with your child about the importance of listening carefully, staying with their class, and taking the drill seriously. Our staff will guide students through each step and ensure they feel supported throughout the process. Regardless of the weather, we will be running the drill so please keep that in mind when preparing for the school day.
If you have any questions, please contact our school. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our community safe!
