A Message from Superintendent Dr. James Everett

I wanted to share an important budget update with you. As you know, school districts across the state, including ours, continue to face significant budget challenges. In February, we shared an update outlining the budget process timeline. At that time, we explained that because the state budget and legislative session do not conclude until late April, we would not have a clear picture of our budget for the upcoming school year until as late as June. While that remains true, based on the information we have now, we are pleased to share that we will not need to do a formal reduction-in-force (RIF) process this year.

Unfortunately, the state continues to underfund K-12 education. While there has been an overall increase in Washington State’s operating budget, funding of K-12 education has not kept pace with growing needs. For example, since 2020, Meridian has been underfunded by over $8.6 million in areas like Special Education, transportation, and materials, supplies, and operating costs (MSOCs).

We want to emphasize that these budget challenges are not the result of poor financial management on our part. We are committed to being responsible stewards of public funds, and we prioritize maintaining outstanding educational programs despite limited resources. Unfortunately, the shortfall we are facing is a statewide issue that many districts are also struggling with.

Last year, we were able to address a nearly $2 million budget shortfall by using attrition, reassignment of roles and furlough days for principals and district leadership. While we will not be submitting a formal RIF notice to the school board this year, we are currently addressing a projected shortfall of up to $1.3 million.

While we are relieved that a formal RIF is not needed, it is important to remember that this process applies only to permanent, continuing-contract certificated positions. Provisional and leave replacement certificated roles, classified positions and directors are not covered under this process. These positions may still be subject to staffing changes based on enrollment, program needs and available funding.

In addition, we’d like to provide a reminder about the upcoming bond election. If the bond is approved on April 22, the approved funds can only be used to build a new Meridian Middle School. They cannot be used for any other projects or for the district’s day-to-day operating expenses.

We are committed to keeping you informed as we continue to work through the budget process. We will share regular updates and aim to provide more information following the close of the state’s legislative session and budget process on April 27, when we expect to have a better idea of next year’s funding.

Thank you for your dedication and understanding.
