We took an opportunity to check in with board members Jana Haugen and Marty Gray to discuss the impact and future of CTE programs in our district.

How do you see the role of CTE programs in education?
Gray: A one-size-fits-all approach to education doesn’t work. We must tailor support for all students by providing trades-based opportunities, and the programs we offer here are outstanding. Our CTE programs prepare many kids to be successful in trades and industry. They also learn basic skills they can use throughout life, like fixing their own things or welding.

Haugen: Seeing how engaged students are in our programs is fantastic. The passion our teachers have for CTE is evident in the excellence showcased in the programs. The skills students are developing will benefit them throughout their lives.

Do you have any CTE success stories?
Gray: My own son benefited from our CTE programs. He found what interested him and developed practical skills that set him on a path to success.

What are your hopes for the future of CTE in Meridian?
Haugen: People recognize the importance of CTE programs, and it shows with the strong support for expanding a skills center in Whatcom County. Dr. Everett is doing a great job working on that.

Gray: We’re excited about the expansion in Whatcom County and increased funding. I could see someday our kids having the chance to walk from Meridian High School to the new skills center. Having so many new opportunities so close would open doors for our kids and benefit our community.
