In Meridian, wellness is integral to our mission of supporting student success. Dedicated Meridian Middle School counselor, Brett Muskavage, exemplifies this commitment through a multifaceted approach that addresses students’ physical, social and emotional well-being.

Mr. Muskavage provides both responsive and proactive support, ensuring students have a safe space to discuss their concerns. This includes one-on-one meetings to address academic, social, emotional, and career-related issues, helping students navigate challenges before they escalate. “We provide both responsive and proactive approaches, ensuring students have a space to talk about what’s going on in their lives,” he explains.

To create a more connected and welcoming school environment, Mr. Muskavage has implemented several initiatives. One notable effort is the use of connection surveys to identify students who feel disconnected. After introducing Friday homeroom activities and targeted interventions, there was a significant increase in students feeling connected to school. These activities foster a sense of belonging and ensure that every student feels supported.

Mr. Muskavage also leads the Social Justice League, a club that addresses issues of racism and discrimination and promotes a more inclusive environment. “We created a space where students could drive action within the school, empowering them to address issues like microaggressions and fostering a more inclusive community,” he shares.

Recognizing the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL), Mr. Muskavage has led the effort to select and support the implementation of the “Overcoming Obstacles” curriculum. This program focuses on problem-solving, relationship-building and emotional regulation skills. “The curriculum encompasses a variety of domains, helping students understand themselves and their relationships with others. It provides the foundation for navigating social complexities and developing essential life skills,” he notes.

Through these comprehensive efforts, Brett Muskavage embodies Meridian’s core value of wellness, ensuring that every student feels connected, supported and empowered to thrive!
