We want to make you aware of a social media trend that has been showing up in schools. It’s called the “Chromebook Challenge,” and it encourages students to insert objects like staples or paper clips into laptop charging ports to try to create sparks or smoke.
While some students may view this as a prank, the reality is that this behavior causes permanent damage to devices and poses a serious safety risk. Tampering with charging ports can cause toxic smoke, fires or even battery explosions. We have already seen some school devices damaged as a result, most incidents occurring on the school bus.
Please take a moment to talk with your student about why this behavior is so risky. Along with the safety concerns, damaging school devices on purpose can also lead to serious consequences at school.
Your support is vital to keeping our schools safe. If you have questions, please contact your child’s school. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe environment for all students.
