A Message from the Meridian School District Board of Directors
The Meridian School District Board of Directors would like to share that Dr. James Everett has accepted the position of Superintendent with the Anacortes School District. He will move into this role on July 1, pending the Anacortes School District Board’s final approval of Dr. Everett’s contract. While we are saddened to see him leave Meridian, we are grateful for his eight years of dedicated service and leadership to our students, staff, and community.
Since 2018, Dr. Everett has led Meridian through both challenges and growth, establishing a clear Strategic Plan centered on belonging, communication, support, wellness, and learning. During the pandemic and recovery, the district maintained strong graduation rates and steady academic performance.
He also advanced key initiatives, including securing funding for the Whatcom Early Learning Center, expanding Career & Technical Education opportunities, and helping gain approval for the Whatcom County Skills Center.
We thank Dr. Everett for his commitment to empowering learners to discover their potential and for building a strong foundation for the future of Meridian School District. We wish him continued success in his new role.
The Board of Directors has unanimously agreed to appoint Assistant Superintendent Dr. Kurt Harvill as Interim Superintendent beginning July 1. Dr. Harvill has faithfully served the Meridian community since 2011 in multiple leadership roles, building strong relationships with staff, students, and families. His deep understanding of the district, steady leadership, and commitment to student success will provide important continuity during this transition.
The Board plans to conduct a comprehensive superintendent search early next school year. We are committed to an inclusive process and will seek meaningful input from students, staff, families, and community members to help guide the selection of Meridian’s next superintendent.
We are confident that Meridian’s strong leadership team, dedicated staff, and supportive community will continue to move our district forward during this transition.
