Good afternoon,
We want to share information regarding potential student walkouts. First and foremost, Meridian School District does not sponsor, organize or encourage student walkouts.
Families sometimes ask what schools can do to prevent walkouts or demonstrations from happening. Schools have limited authority to stop peaceful student expression. Our primary responsibilities are for students’ education and safety, both of which we can accomplish more effectively when students remain on campus.
If some students do decide to walk out, it is important that families understand our role and response. Meridian School District respects students’ First Amendment rights to peaceful assembly and free expression under Board Policy 3223 Freedom of Assembly and Board Policy 3220 Freedom of Expression. As a public school, we must balance student rights with our responsibility to maintain order.
At the same time, leaving class without approval is treated as an unexcused absence, and once students leave campus, the school cannot supervise their actions.
Please also note the following expectations, which are true in all circumstances:
- Students who wish to leave campus at any time are required to check out with the main office and receive permission from a parent or guardian, as well as have a plan for how they will leave campus safely.
- Our schools are closed campuses. Only current students and staff are permitted on school grounds during the school day.
- While on campus, any speech or behavior that is harassing, intimidating, discriminatory, uncivil, bullying, or substantially disruptive to the orderly operation of school, as described in Board Policy 3207 Prohibition Against Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying will not be tolerated.
With these expectations in mind, we encourage families to talk with their students about making thoughtful choices and understanding both their rights and their responsibilities as members of our learning community.
We also recognize that these events bring out strong feelings and a wide range of perspectives. If your student feels uncomfortable or overwhelmed, please encourage them to reach out to a trusted staff member. Our counseling teams are available to support any student who needs assistance.
Thank you for your continued partnership!
