A Message from Superintendent Dr. James Everett
We have begun planning our budget for the 2026–27 school year. The state legislative session is underway. We will not have a full picture of next year’s funding until the session concludes on March 12, and then it takes at least a month for OSPI to allocate funding.
Many districts across the state have been forced to make difficult cuts and hard decisions due to ongoing funding shortfalls. While Meridian has worked hard to avoid deep reductions, we have still faced tough decisions around programs and staffing.
Last month, I participated in a town hall organized by Fund Schools Now, a parent-led organization working to raise awareness about the financial challenges facing public schools. I encourage you to watch the town hall to hear from students, superintendents and our local representatives. I know conversations about school budgets can feel exhausting, and I appreciate your engagement. It is important to recognize that despite a constitutional requirement to fully fund education, state funding has not kept pace with the true costs of operating schools.
As we watch the legislative process, we will be reviewing our district budget and forecasting for the year ahead. Your input matters.
