A Message from Superintendent Dr. James Everett
Every end of the school year is a celebration. We have the opportunity to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our students and staff and reflect on another year of learning.
Our kindergartners have celebrated their first graduation and are preparing for first grade. Our eighth graders are getting ready to begin high school. Our seniors have crossed the stage and are preparing to take their next steps into the world. Each milestone represents the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
These transitions are exciting, but they can also be bittersweet. They remind us that growth often requires us to leave behind what is familiar and step into something new.
As this school year comes to a close, I am also preparing for a transition to Anacortes School District. Looking back, I am filled with gratitude.
My Meridian journey began in 2010 when I became principal of Meridian High School and continued as I became superintendent in 2018. From day one, I felt the pride and strong sense of community that makes Meridian such a special place. I quickly learned that this is a community that shows up for its students.
A lot happens in a school district over 13 years, and I am super proud of the work we have done together to expand opportunities for students and families.
The future Whatcom County Skills Center will open doors for students to explore careers and pursue their passions, while the Whatcom Early Learning Center will provide much-needed childcare and expand opportunities for students interested in a career in early childhood education. I am hopeful these will become valuable assets for Meridian and Whatcom County students.
While I am proud of what we have accomplished together, it is the people who will stay with me. I will remember the students’ enthusiasm, our dedicated colleagues, the families who partnered with us every step of the way and the many moments that reinforced why serving in public education is such a privilege. Learning Thrives Here is more than a tagline. It is something we experience every day in Meridian.
As I prepare for my next chapter, I find comfort in knowing Meridian is in a good place. Just as our students move forward into new opportunities, Meridian will continue to thrive.
Serving Meridian has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Thank you for welcoming me, for your trust and for everything we accomplished together.
I wish each of you the very best in your journey ahead.
With gratitude,
Dr. James Everett
