A Message from Superintendent James Everett:
Good Evening,
This afternoon we heard an announcement from Governor Jay Inslee that all schools in the state of Washington will remain closed for the remainder of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Given his recent extension of his Stay Home, Stay Healthy order, we were anticipating further guidance for school districts.
We had hoped we would return together this spring. I’m sorry to share this update. Spring is such an exciting time to experience the culmination of learning and the relationships that have been growing from the beginning of the year. I can assure you, students and parents – we are also devastated this is our reality.
Now that we have a clear understanding of our status, we will continue to ensure we address health and safety, delivery of meals, support for child care, and continuous learning. As I shared in my letter included in this week’s learning content, we are shifting to expand our educational offerings and access to technology. Over the next few weeks, there will be an emphasis on providing new content and checking student understanding – utilizing what has been called ‘emergency remote learning.’ This is not what we would plan for, nor hope for any of us, but know we are motivated to support you and will still expect the best of our students.
Please be patient as we work with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the State Board of Education and other agencies to determine the best steps to take while addressing grades, credits, and graduation requirements. Information will be coming soon with further guidance. In particular, for our seniors, please know if you were on-track when we closed our school buildings, be assured you will have the opportunity to graduate this June.
Again, I am sorry it has come to this. I have heard it said several times we are going to emerge from this public health crisis stronger than before. I believe it is the truth. Meridian is a strong community and we will rally to take care of each other. Thank you for the support you have shown and will continue to provide one another. Stay healthy and be well.
