I am writing to provide an update regarding a student walkout that occurred today. As a reminder, Meridian School District does not sponsor, organize or encourage student walkouts.

At approximately 1 p.m., a group of about 80 students left class to participate in a peaceful protest at the corner of Laurel Road and Guide Meridian.

Our top priority is ensuring that the school day continues as usual and that all students and staff remain safe. During the student-led walkout, school staff remained in the building and classroom instruction continued.

Meridian School District respects students’ First Amendment rights to peaceful assembly and free expression, as outlined in board policies 3223 and 3220. However, leaving class without approval is considered an unexcused absence. Students who participated in the walkout were marked absent for the classes they missed, and families will be notified of these unexcused absences through our normal attendance notification process.

We appreciate the cooperation of students and staff in helping maintain a safe and respectful learning environment today.
