Principal’s Message

IRE Families,
As we observe the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. holiday today, we want to take a moment to recognize the significance of this day. It’s a time to honor Dr. King’s efforts to promote equality and justice for all people in our country.
Across the school, classrooms, like in our most recent instagram post, have been engaging in meaningful activities to explore Dr. King’s legacy and the values of compassion, courage, and community. Feel free to ask your child about what they have learned.
While it is a day off from school, we encourage families to reflect on Dr. King’s work together. There are many sites that offer great resources for children (and parents) to learn more about his life and teachings in a way that’s accessible and inspiring. Check them out here:
Thank you for joining us in celebrating this important day. We will see you tomorrow back at school.
Best,
Tyler Dockins, Principal

Highly Capable Screening and Opt-Out

2nd and 5th Grade Parents,
At the end of January, your child will participate in the 2nd grade or 5th grade CogAT screener to help determine placement in the Highly Capable Program (HCP). The Highly Capable Program serves the academic needs of students who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. Referral for assessment does not guarantee qualification.
The district will use the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) as a screening tool in the HCP identification process. The CogAT screener is completed on computers. It is a timed multiple choice test and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The CogAT is used in conjunction with all other available information to help a committee determine if your child qualifies for HCP services. If your child qualifies for services you will be notified and asked for permission before your student participates.
If your child qualifies for further testing, you will be notified in February. The data will be reviewed in March when all testing is complete. Final notifications will be sent out by April.
Screening is optional. If you do not want your child to participate in the screening, please fill out the form and submit it no later than Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025.
Opt-Out Form (English)
Opt-Out Form (Spanish)

Access for English Language Learners

Each year, students in English learner programs take an assessment to measure their English knowledge and skills. This assessment is called ACCESS for ELLs. The test measures academic English language proficiency for students learning English in our school and throughout our state.
Teachers in our school use this information to help them make decisions about instruction for your child. Teachers also use these test scores to monitor the progress your child makes toward English proficiency.
Students who are multilingual learners will take the ACCESS for ELLs test between January 27th and March 21st.
Please let us know if you have any questions!
