Principal’s Message

IRE Families,
As we close out the Memorial Day weekend, I want to take a moment to recognize the significance of this important day. Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the brave people who have sacrificed their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and a chance to express our gratitude.
While this long weekend often marks the start of summer activities, I encourage you to take a few moments to talk with your children about the meaning behind Memorial Day. Here are a few helpful resources to guide age-appropriate conversations:
Also, this is the last week to complete a survey to support IRE students. We have a tremendous opportunity to bring valuable resources to our school community through a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County. This grant would support after-school and summer programs that benefit both students and families.
To strengthen our application, we need your help! Please take a moment to complete a short, anonymous survey. The more responses we receive, the better our chances of securing this funding. If you’re curious, more details are included below.
Best,
Tyler Dockins

Support Future Programs for Students

Meridian School District is partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County to apply for a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant. This grant would provide funding to support after-school and summer programs for our students.
The community learning center would provide a safe, supportive space outside of school hours where students can engage in academic support, healthy lifestyle activities and personal enrichment activities that build on their regular school day. It would also offer educational and personal development opportunities for participating students’ families.
As part of the grant application process, we are asking families to complete a short anonymous survey. The survey includes questions about what types of programs and services would be most beneficial for our students and community. Students in grade 3-8, will also complete an anonymous interest survey next week.
This is a great opportunity to bring additional resources and enrichment to our district, and your input is essential. We appreciate your time and support in completing the survey by Tuesday, May 27.
Notice of Intent to Apply for 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant
In accordance with the application instructions from the U.S. Department of Education, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County hereby submits this Notice of Intent to apply for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program Grant serving Meridian School District.
This grant will provide academic enrichment activities during non-school hours or periods when school is not in session for all qualifying students. The program will also offer students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities that are designed to complement the regular academic program. The 21st CCLC programs offer families opportunities for active and meaningful engagement in their child’s education, including opportunities for literacy and related educational development.
To provide input on the program or to view the grant application, please contact Ashli McVey, Vice President of Resource Development, at amcvey@whatcomclubs.org.

Subject: Technology Update: Devices to Stay at School for TK–2

Thank you for your feedback on the recent technology use survey. We appreciate your continued partnership in supporting student learning.
Starting next school year, students in Transitional Kindergarten (TK), kindergarten, first and second grades will keep their school-issued devices at school rather than taking them home daily. This shift reflects both current needs and your feedback. Many of you shared that your child rarely uses their device at home.
This change will allow us to focus more intentionally on developing students’ technology literacy and using devices to support purposeful, guided learning in the classroom.
To prepare for this transition, we will be collecting devices and chargers during the week of June 2.
Thank you for your continued support. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
