IRE Families,
We are excited to start our process of planning ahead, and welcome input on the school year calendar with an opportunity to share your thoughts below. Thank you for staying connected, sharing your feedback and partnering with us!
This week’s social emotional learning focus is growing through practice. Our youngest learners are practicing and believing “we can do it,” grades 2–3 are making practice plans to improve, and grades 4–5 are celebrating growth and identifying next steps.
Continue the conversation at home:
  • PK–1: What are you getting better at by practicing?
  • Grades 2–3: How did your practice plan help you improve?
  • Grades 4–5: What evidence shows your growth, and what is your next step?
Thank you for helping your child recognize their progress and keep trying!

Arrival & Dismissal: Thank You, Families!

Thank you, families, for your patience and flexibility during arrival and dismissal! We are moving 800+ students to buses and parent pickup each day, and your help makes a big difference in keeping things moving efficiently. We appreciate how well everyone is merging, following directions, and exiting safely.
A few helpful reminders:
  • If possible, please use the pickup line rather than arriving early to park. We have a limited number of parking spots, especially now that staff are no longer able to park on the grass in the back due to weather conditions. Driving through the pickup line helps us keep things moving and ensures there is room for everyone.
  • At 3:30, you may scan the QR code to have your student begin walking out.
  • At 3:35, teachers begin walking their classes to dismissal spots so that we are all ready to go at 3:40.
  • We do not release buses until parent pickup is finished, so keeping the parent pickup line moving helps us get everyone home on time.
  • As always, please follow the road signs and make right turns only onto Hannegan Road during arrival and dismissal.
Thank you for helping us make arrival and dismissal safe, smooth, and efficient for everyone!

Roots of Empathy

We are excited to host Roots of Empathy in 2nd grade Irene Reither Elementary classrooms again this year. The program involves pairing a community family with a young baby together with a grade school classroom that they will visit throughout the year. Here’s a quick (1 ½ minute) video that gives a little overview of what the program looks like in action.
If you or anyone you know welcomed a baby between May and September of this year, we would love to welcome Baby and their family to a IRE classroom to participate in a program that uses babies as “tiny teachers” of empathy. Volunteering with your baby would involve one or both parents coming into the classroom with your baby once a month for a 30-minute lesson. The Roots of Empathy instructor would engage your baby with toys and lead a discussion with the students on various themes including, crying, sleep, communication, and safety. Classrooms take proper precautions through handwashing and not touching baby or their toys.
We are also looking for individuals to train to become Volunteer Instructors at IRE. Instructors visit the same classroom about 1x a week for 30 minutes and deliver Roots’ evidence-based curriculum. Instructors come from varied backgrounds and are sometimes a stay at home parent, retired teachers, aspiring mental health professionals, or a grandparent. The new Instructor training is in Bellingham October 19th-21st.

Washington State Youth Essay Program – 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade

The VFW Post 9301 in Lynden is asking for all interested students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade to participate in the Washington State Youth Essay Program. Students explore the people, principles, and history that shaped our nation through patriotic writing. Each grade is judged separately.
This year’s theme is “What I would say to a founding father or founding mother”
Students write their own essay of no more than 250 words. It may be handwritten, typed, or computer prepared. The student’s name, city, and school must not appear on the essay, only on the official entry form. No color, artwork, or poem form. A parent must sign the entry form. Homeschool students are eligible, and a student does not have to enter through the school.
Deadlines:
  • October 31, 2026 — Student entries due to a local VFW Post or Auxiliary (Post 9301)
  • 7011 Hannegan Rd Everson, WA 98247 (mailed or dropped in door mail slot)
